Postby acdcgirl » Sat Mar 05, 2011 6:44 am

I HAVE GAINED 20 LBS SINCE I'VE HAD C-DIFF. I'VE HAD IT ABOUT 5 MONTHS AND IM BLOATED AS HELL. FROM ALL IM READING, EVERYONE ELSE LOSES WEIGHT. COULD IT BE A SIDE EFFECT FROM FLAGYL OR VANCO? I DON'T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO TAKE THIS WRONG AND IM NOT BEING CONDESENDING....BUT WHY CAN'T I LOSE WEIGHT?

When people have active c diff infection, they tend to lose weight because the intestine does not absorb food properly. If you take the medication, and the medication helps the condition, then that might account for the weight gain. Others when they go on the meds also gain weight. I don't think it is a side effect from the meds, just your intestines absorbing the food better. I'm not a doctor, so you should ask one, but I do know that this has been the case with others. I would lose weight off vanco and gain some on it. I did not take Flagyl.

Regardless of ANY disease a 20 lbs weight gain is not normal
Consult your Dr and get your Thyroid checked
There's a reason for a dramatic weight gain and it's definatley not c.diff related.

Agree with Roy, certainly not normal cdiff symptoms....have you been tested appropriately?

Hi acdcgirl,

Don't know if this has been resolved for you yet, but wanted to let you know I also have bloated and gained weight on the Flagyl. I think it's water weight because my weight has been varying +5lbs overnight. I don't know what to do for it, but wanted to let you know! I think any weight gain/loss that happens so fast is usually water weight, and probably won't be permanent. If yours came on more slowly and it sticks around, maybe get your thyroid tested as others suggested!
The bloating I have is just around my middle, not my face, arms, legs, etc. so it will hopefully go away once I'm off the Flagyl.

I’ve never heard of weight gain during active C-Diff. In order to rule out other possible health conditions, I am suggesting that you make an appointment with your primary doctor. Good luck to you!!!!
I ask not for a lighter burden, but for broader shoulders.

By any chance are you on prednisone? It increases appetite (I can attest to that!) and therefore frequently causes weight gain. Good luck.
