I recently heard from other Cdiff patients that they either have or believe they have histamine intolerance since recovering from CDiff.
I'm learning that there are other collateral conditions caused by a disrupted/damaged gut.
I'm wondering what all there could possibly be?!!!
And - who can we as recovering patients turn to, to help guide us through these murky waters?
In the case of the histamine intolerance, someone may be thinking they're doing the right thing by adding fermented foods. Only to find out through variously bizarre symptoms that they've actually hurt themselves because fermented foods are loaded with histamine!
Who can help us with all of these obstacles we are unaware of????

Re: Collateral Damage Care? Ie. Histamine intolerance, anxiety, ibs, etc...
I had histamine issues before all of this started. I had been taking zantac and claritin every day for years because of the histamine blocking effects. I quickly found out after getting C diff that certain probiotics caused a horrible flare up of my interstitial cystitis (which had been controlled with the histamine blockers).
I found a list of probiotics that were supposedly safer for those with histamine issues. The ones I can get away with are:
* Florastor: Saccharomyces Boulardii
* Culturelle : Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG
* Align : Bifidobacterium infantis Strain: 35624
* Digestive Advantage: BC30 (Bacillus coagulans) (although i think this one is supposed to be bad for histamine, it doesn't seem to bother me.
I've been eating plain greek yogurt and Kefir and it hasn't seemed to have worsened my Interstitial cystitis symptoms (which is how I can tell when histamine is giving me fits.

When you're in the midst of a histamine overload, how do you negate it?
I'm not certain that I have this condition but based on what I've read, there is a strong possibility.
this whole week I've been suffering from histamine overload, or so I think...could be CDiff is back or a bug.
But say I am having a histamine overload, how do I stop it?
I tried Benadryl and Citerazine but neither helped and sort of made it worse.
I've been "flushing" my system with low histamine juices, ala apples, celery, carrots, beets, cucumber.
Cut out bananas, avocado, all fermented foods, egg whites, spinach, etc...
My other concern, is what else is there that we CDiff folks need to be aware of?
I've read people who had CDiff now have other issues as a result of their bad gut.
My GI doc didn't give me a book of "So now that you've had CDiff, here's what you got to do now, look out for, and be aware of"
Is there such a specialist that is versed in CDiff from nuts to bolts? If so, what are they called?
I'm thinking of using a Naturopath but is that pseudo science mumbo jumbo? At this point, should I care? Know what I mean... :(

Unfortunately, I'm new to having C diff and don't have any real answers. I hope somebody on the forum that is more knowledgeable will be able to weigh in on this! :-)

No worries Bennet. Sorry you're part of the "club".
About your histamine intolerance, though...do you just ride it out? How do you stop it or what do you do to lessen the effects?

Re: Collateral Damage Care? Ie. Histamine intolerance, anxiety, ibs, etc...
My problems with histamine show up as interstitial cystitis, basically bladder pain. I have managed by taking histamine 2 blockers (zantac) and the claritin. Pretty much if i take Zantac I can make myself feel better. Unfortunately, I know Zantac is probably not great for C diff.
I hope you feel better soon! :-)

Thanks Bennet, Hope you feel better, too!
Not sure how long you've been dealing with cdiff, but I found a lot of good information on this board.
Like: buying clorox germicidal hospital strength wipes to help with speedy clean up. YOu can also get wipes to go should you have to venture out.
If your cdiff is active, clean the toilet after use, especially if sharing a bathroom.
The strength of the clorox matters. the stronger the better. Wash towels, washclothes, etc in hot water with bleach.
Since you're histamine sensitive, you'll may need to stay away from the kefirs and kombuchas, anything fermented. (i THINK FERMENTED O.D. DID ME IN)
I was doing good on eggs, salmon, brown rice, and soft veggies with some baby food thrown in and limited amounts of kefir/kombucha.
I would drink pedialyte instead of gatorade to minimize sugar content.
Sugar feeds the bad bacteria.
Prebiotics help feed the good bacteria. I have been trying to get my prebiotics via natural food sources but am contemplating a supplement.
Also, I've read that there is a DAO supplement, which is the enzyme that "eats" the histamines.
I was thinking of trying this too, but my husband says I need to stop self diagnosing.
I've lined up a couple of naturopaths to look into. Maybe they can help navigate for you, too!
I switched to gummy vitamins during treatment as my stomach could not tolerate pill form, but know I'm able to take regular vitamins. Do try to get your vitamins and minerals somehow, especially if your food intake is limited due to your healing gut.
Also, you may hear about leaky gut, which is real. Bone broth is always recommended, but it tends to be high in histamines. Dr.Axe (on the internet) recommend to use chicken stock instead of broth (because it isn't cooked as long as broth) or buying bone broth powder since it has a lower histamine content.
You may know all of this stuff already but maybe there is something in there that you'll find helpful, as well.
Prayers to you and for your healing!

There was a poster named amyc who had mast cell issues and that affects histamine. You might try and send her a pm and see if she answers you. She recommended a book for me to read about mast cell issues called "Never Bet Against Occam" by Lawrence B. Afrin M.D. There are doctors who specialize in this. I did not think it was my problem, but it was definitely something she had.

I agree with Beth. Try to contact amyc. PM or email her. I am sure she will be helpful. She also worked in the medical profession for years but cannot give medical advice as this is not a medical site.
Best of luck.
