Muprocin Ointment?

Postby AEM25 » Tue Oct 31, 2017 7:45 pm

Hello! I was recently diagnosed with C-diff and I am currently on Vancomycin 125mg four times a day. My question is, I have this "thing" in my nose and the ENT would like me to apply muprocin 2% ointment to it once a day for 7 days. She isn't sure exactly what it is but she said that Muprocin covers staph and MRSA. Is muprocin applied topically inside the nose going to put me at risk to relapse with c diff? If it is not gone by my next appointment in 2 weeks, she wants to remove it. What is everyone else's experience with muprocin ointment? Thanks!

Mupirocin is an antibiotic. While topical antibiotics don’t usually cause c diff, they can. Unfortunately you have already found that out.You might want to talk to your GI dr before you use it and think about asking the ENT to culture the “thing” in your nose before doing anything. When all else fails, if you are still uncomfortable, you can get a 2nd opinion.

I have used Mupirocin nasally without problem but I also was not in the midst of treating active c diff. It was several years later.

I agree with everything that Ril said. I used mupirocin recently without a problem. This was for treating the wound from having a basal cell carcinoma removed. I too am many years past having cdiff.

The pharmacy info sheet for mupirocin listed cdiff as one of the many potential side effects, which scared me a lot, so at first I just treated my wound with neosporin, because I had used it in the past without problems. After about a week of neosporin, I got brave and tried the mupirocin, and as I said above, no problems. I then alternated between neosporin and mupirocin for the remaining 3 weeks that my wound was healing.

I had to use it 4 x per day for an infected biopsy on my hand for about 10 days, although not 4x for that long. I had no problems and it cured the infection. The doctor was going to put me on oral antibiotics until I explained my c diff history and he said he would try this, but if didn't work I would have to take pills. Thankfully, it worked.

Thanks everyone! This is all so new and scary and it never seems that you have to deal with one thing at a time, it all comes in multiples! So, I called the ENT back and explained the situation. She said she wants me to stop Bactroban and she wants me to take valtrex every 8 hours for 10 days. She said it's not an antibiotic but an antiviral. Oh course any medication right now is freaking me out!! I put a call into my GI to ask about the valtrex but I don't know when I will hear back.

You might also call a pharmacist for info.

Good luck.
