Re: Antibiotic Creams - Neosporin
I was told by my infectious disease doctor to never use an antibiotic ointment again. In fact, he told me to ditch every product I had that is is labeled an "antibiotic", including soap.

I don't believe that any antibiotic cream can effect bacteria anywhere in the body except where it is applied. If it could then doctors would prescribe ointments instead of pills when fighting infections within one's body. If antibiotic creams could cause C-diff, then, with the countless millions who use antibiotic creams, there would be many more times the C-diff sufferers than there are now.

Re: Antibiotic Creams - Neosporin
Antibiotic creams are implicated in causing c.diff.
It probably says so on the pack insert.
Many posters will confirm that creams caused their initial c.diff or caused a relapse.
Creams are absorbed into the skin, filtered from the blood by the liver and disposed of via the colon.
It's only a small dose but its still enough to cause harm.
What goes in must come out!
I have a liver disease, I must not use pain killing creams as they might damage my liver.
To prove a point has anyone used nicotine patches to give up smoking?

Thank you all for your comments and advice~
I almost thought I had to use it but after talking to my doctors, that was not the case. They understand my painful past of what happened to me before.
Thanks

Machaon
We have several posters who have gotten CDIFF with Clindamycin topical cream. One would not think there is a risk, but they have finally labeled many creams as a risk. There is also a vaginal cream that is now labeled it can cause CDIFF. There have been recent changes in so many medications PPI's and creams that now carry a label as having CDIFF as a risk.
Sadly for all of us, we have to be extra cautious with anything we consider using. Some physicians are still unaware of the risks. If there is ever a question, always check with your pharmacist. They must be up on all new labels.

Re: Antibiotic Creams - Neosporin
I asked my c diff specialist in NYC about Neosporin. He said it's fine to use (that it is not like Clindamycin etc.). He was highly recommended by this board. I've also seen several posters say they used it with no issue and have used it myself. Not sure if it is used in a super large area maybe it would cause an issue? But now this post has me wondering.

Re: Antibiotic Creams - Neosporin
Clindamycin cream did cause me c diff, but I have used neosporin often with no problems at all. I also had to use Bactroban (mupirocin) for an infection on my hand and I was concerned, but no problem. I had no choice or I would have had to take an oral antibiotic.

Re: Antibiotic Creams - Neosporin
Yesterday, while cutting thru a romaine lettuce stalk to fill three salad bowls, I got careless and sliced my thumb. I am on anti-clotting, Xarelto, so I experienced some pretty good bleeding, especially when cleansing the cut with soap. I bandaged the cut tightly to stop the bleeding, which was successful.
This morning, I removed the bandage and looked at the wound. Did not look bad. No puss. No bleeding.
I do not want to take a chance on it infecting, so I treated it with a small dab of triple antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin zinc, Neomycin sulfate, Polymyxin B sulfate) and rebandaged. I did not want to wash it with soap and water, because that tends to start the bleeding and delay healing. So... after pondering the risks of a relapse versus an infection developing, I decided to use the topical antibiotic cream. I felt that I was between a rock and a hard place!
I am around three months post-dificid without any problems, and still taking Saccharomyces Boulardii; and one Dr. Tobias Deep Immune probiotics; and one Dr. Tobias 30 Billion CFUs probiotics; and one NOW 25 Billion Probiotic-10 plus multivitamins and 3000 mg omega3, all of which I also took while on dificid.
My potties have been somewhat normal. It'll be interesting to see if there are any changes to my potties, although I hope that they don't get too interesting!

Re: Antibiotic Creams - Neosporin
I used an antibiotic ointment that was even stronger than that- 4 x per day and then tapering for about 2 weeks. It was for an infected biopsy on my hand. I never had any symptoms and I use Neosporin on all my cuts. Like you said, Machaon, you don't want to get an infection and then have to treat with antibiotic in pill form. I'm sure it's fine.

Hi denizz, thanks for the feedback from your son's ped gi!
Hi beth22! Thanks for your comments!
My last cut was on my arm and it bled for over a week until I debrided the wound! The stupid dead skin was keeping the wound open, also effected by being on xarelto! I used plenty of soap and water and antibiotic ointment and avoided infection.
So far so good with my thumb wound. I've used the triple antibiotic twice, but switched over to using a paste comprised of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and salt and bandaged.
All is well at current. No sign of infection. It was a little deep, so I am very thankful that it didn't infect! I have no idea how my thumb got in the way. I am usually pretty careful. I've always wanted to add some meat to my salads, but there's got to be a better way!
After six days, it is still sore but no sign of swelling or pus or discoloration.
Thanks, Bob
