I took Cipro for a UTI and that gave me C. Diff (although I had also taken other antibiotics during the 6 months prior to the UTI.) Usually, Macrobid is prescribed and it is quite low on the list as an offender. I am very prone to UTI's and have handled them with just drinking lots and lots of water (especially after my experience with C. Diff). My urologist recommends Macrobid for most UTI's and gives it to me when I get my once a year urethral dilation. Since C. Diff, whenever I have to take an antibiotic, I take probiotics during the whole period I am on the antibiotic as a JIC measure (although they do increase my IBS). Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
Aloha,
Anne

Re: Cipro for Uti
So the bactrum did not work to get rid of uti. And bactrum brought back the cdiff. Now I have been on vanco and cipro. Took my last dose of cipro tonight. And before I took it I started to feel sick like I still have the uti. I read somewhere the other drug for cdiff is dificid. Does this cause uti s the way vanco does?

Re: Cipro for Uti
Vanco doesn't cause UTIs but it can cause urinary urgency, burning and frequency. I also had urinary urgency for many months after the C. diff. Dificid is usually very well tolerated ( I didn't have any problems with it). I am so sorry you are dealing with this!!

Are you still on the vancomycin? Have your GI problems resolved?

You need to see an infectious diseases specialist. ID will be able to help with the UTI and C diff.

Re: Cipro for Uti
I hope this primary dr is not treating your c diff!
Are you seeing a GI? If not ask your dr to get you an emergency appointment with one.
And if she does not, you make an appointment with one immediately, tell them it is an emergency, that you have recurrent c diff and will take any cancellation and call daily if you have to. If they can't help with the UTI as well, you would be better off looking for a day clinic or urgent care that has an internal medicine dr than your dr.
And I would change drs ....
My opinion, but this is basic stuff and I would be gone.

Re: Cipro for Uti
Fever and chills are not normal symptoms for an uncomplicated UTI. Fever and chills mean something more serious, like a kidney infection or that the infection has gotten into your bloodstream. Please follow up with your doctor/a doctor ASAP.

Re: Cipro for Uti
After two rounds of cipro, the uti seems gone. I am still on Vanco. My primary wants me to stay on til my Gastro doctor appointment which is not til September 20th. I wanted to taper off. She said wait til gi dr. I am tapering anyway. This poison is horrible. Instead of four pills I am doing three a day. Any thoughts?

My thoughts are that you should follow your Drs instructions.
They know how your responding and what your asking for is medical advice.
ONLY a Dr can give advice like that.

Follow the others' advice. I had a UTI from the same bacteria. it can be nasty.
Can you get in to see a urologist? Perhaps the Cipro worked without causing c diff. We will keep our fingers crossed for you.
Drink lots of water.

Re: Cipro for Uti
My thoughts are same as Roy's.
As I told you earlier I thought you should be seeing a GI and now you will be.
In terms of tapering vanco on your own, the one thing I do agree with your dr-and Roy- is stay on the prescribed dose and let the GI decide treatment. Why risk a recurrence because you decide to play dr on your own? Makes no sense to me.

Re: Cipro for Uti
When I have a UTI, I do the test twice - just in case. I am very careful to do a "clean catch." Check the container - sometimes the lids come off the container before they are used.
Again drink lots of water.
Best!

Re: Cipro for Uti
I finally got to a GI dr. She said my symptoms that are flu like is not caused from the c diff which she thinks is gone. But when I come off the vanco I get flu like symptoms and D. So she wants me to taper off the vanco. And if I start to get sick then go to the hospital.
And the Urologist thinks I only had one uti even tho my primary treated me three times.
I feel like I have been taking all this poison for nothing. Yet I keep getting sick and then the vanco makes me better.
So tomorrow I go back to my primary to find out how we can figure out what is causing these symptoms.
I cried when I left the G I dr. She says no cdiff yet offered nothing.
My last test for cdiff was negative but I was on vanco when it was done. But she said it's not cdiff. Flu like symptoms is not cdiff. Ugh.

Sorry Laurel
Its very difficult to know what is actually going on.The PCR test on Vanco is not accurate. It's possible the Vanco taper may to the trick, it has worked for a lot of people.
A Urologist looks much closer than out typical PCP's for UTI's. They don't often treat a UTI unless there is a positive culture and generally over 60,000 colonies.
Hang in there, hope you feel better soon!
