IgA deficiency

Postby mommyof2 » Fri Aug 11, 2017 7:50 pm

I have a 3 month old and got c. diff from the antibiotic they put me on for mastitis. I'm currently on my 1st relapse after 10 days on Flagyl I'm now on 14 days of vanco. I also have an IgA deficiency. Anyone else out there successfully beat this with an IgA deficiency? I'm having a really hard time being positive knowing that I have this underlying complication. Any advice would be most welcome. I also have a 2 year old and am terrified that one of my kids or my husband will get this.

Hello Mommyof2 and Welcome to the site Please read the first thread for all new posters

I am sory you had to find us, especially with a new little one and a toddler but you will find we have several new Mom's on the site. As far as your IGA deficiency I am not aware anyone has had that specific condition since I have been on. We have many on the site with other illnesses that do complicate things. CDIFF is tough and can be difficult to get rid of but hopefully once your treatment is complete you will be in recovery...which can take some time depending on each person. We have had several on the site that take one or two rounds and they are well and on their way!

Give it some time. I would talk with your GI about your concerns in reference to another underlying condition.

Hopefully some of the new Mom's will jump in here

Hello, I have igA deficiency and maybe can help by sharing my experience thus far. My GI and ID both don't understand if igA does play a part in recovery but it seems to have made it more difficult. I failed all antibiotic treatments and required 2 FMTs from different donors. I am now 12 weeks post 2nd FMT and still c diff free. I have PI-IBS and having more good days now that it's been 3 months.
Don't give up hope. You will be c diff free. Just some of us have a more difficult recovery than others.
I was told about ig infusions by someone here. I haven't done it myself but seriously considering it at this point.

Also, don't be afraid about transmission. Bleach your bathroom and high touch surfaces with those Clorox healthcare grade bleach wipes and wash your hands often (every time you use the bathroom or prepare/eat food of any kind). My husband and baby did not get c diff from me and I was sick for over 18 months.

I just looked up IVIG transfusions--I feel like this is what I need on so many levels. I also have autoimmune diseases that are active right now (which I was expecting since it happened after my first child was born). What kind of doctor should I ask about this? I feel like my GP is worthless but did refer me to a GI. They could only fit me in with the NP at the GI next week, but it's a start. Would they know anything about this? Who else should I ask? I feel like if i just stick to antibiotic treatment this is going to drag on for ever. Anyone else out there done an IVIG transfusion?

I haven't done the infusions myself but want to. Right now I just started a new job and in the middle of switching insurance policies so now isn't a good time. Once I get my new GP I will get my referral and plan to see an immunologist.

Hi mommyof2.

I had a severe case of c.diff 6 years ago. Failed Flagyl and Vanco but was put into remission with one 10 day course of Dificid.

I was found to be IgG deficient with borderline IgA and IgM ( found post c.diff.)

So I am here to tell you that yes, you will beat this even with an IgA deficiency. I was septic with c.diff and I survived with all 3 low immunoglobulins. Just wanting to put your mind at ease that you will beat this even with a low IgA.

IVIG contains predominantly IgG antibodies but some see a very slight increase in IgA too. It might be worth a try.

Good luck to you!

Jo

Thank you JoElizabeth! I see a RA at the GI's office this afternoon and this gives me hope. I'm in the middle of a 2 week course of Vanco right now and things are starting to get better. I'm functional which is good because I'm a teacher and go back to work on Monday. I just hope that I can make it past the first week once the Vanco ends!
