Christina was 6 years old when she first started having bloody mucus stools. The pediatrician misdiagnosed, telling me it wasn't blood, it was strawberries or red colored food, told me it was nothing to worry about. After 2 more days of bloody diahrea she woke one morning with stiff pains in her legs, I took her to emergency, where they noted bloodly mucus stools, blood in her urine, and a muscle test was taken, showing a CPK test result of 426 (Normal range for this test is 24-170), within a few hours in emergency her arms too became stiff and painful and she could no longer walk. They kept her for the day and sent her to immunology since there was infection detected in almost every part of her body and they thought it was an immune system breakdown (asked me about AIDS). They gave her a dose of Bactrim!

I felt they were wrong, called a gastro specialist from another hospital who recognized the symptoms, he told me to pick her up and walk out of that hospital and go directly to his office. He began treatment immediately with yogurt! He may have also given her a rx, but I can't remember, but I did use the yogurt and her symptoms subsided within a week. I thought we were lucky.

Here is my question: Her arm and leg muscles were very inflamed during c-def infection - I don't see anything on this site referring to this symptom - the muscle pain/stiffness/unable to walk. I was told the c-dif was in her muscles. And her urinary system was also badly infected at that time.

7 years later: Since infection, she has always had incontenence problems, no urinary control, takes Ditropan to control bladder. She also has small motor problems in her arms/fingers which were affected at time of original infection. She has been diagnosed by the local Neurological Institute as having Motor Dyspraxia and Disgraphia. Her handwriting is that of a 6 year old, she has trouble writing, her problems are strictly physical. She also has muscle strength weakness and works in a gym twice a week to help that. She is now 13 and there are no programs at school to help a kid with an illness caused by a real disease - c-def. I need some document that will prove to the school she has a real disablility. I was told at the time the only long term to expect was colitis - they never mentioned the dyspraxia but her muscles were as affected as her colon was.

Has anyone else suffered Dysgraphia or muscle/nervous system problems after a c-def infection?
