Florastor question

Postby chrissy72 » Tue Aug 11, 2009 2:33 pm

Do you all only take it when you are on an antibiotic? My GI specialist said to take in while on my flagyl but by the time I saw him I was more than half way through my meds so I didn't buy any. Is it too late to take? I take acidophillous on a regular basis now but I'm still mulling over whether or not I need to buy the Florastor and how long it should be taken.

I still take Florastor although I have cut way back. I am now almost 11 months post c diff. It helps to rebuild your good bacteria and there have been small studies done that showed if taken while on meds it can reduce relapse rate by 50%.

Not a bad idea to start it if you can afford it.

Can you take it if you are not on an antibiotic? I only have one more day left of flagyl.

Yes, you can take it while on the antibiotic and/or after. Either way, for most people it is beneficial. It is a yeast probiotic that survives stomach acid, and is not killed off by antibiotics.
Hoping for a cure.

I've been taking Florastor for 10 months and I stopped having C-Diff in Sept. 2008, so yes, you can take it whenever. The ideal thing to do is double dose it when you are on antibiotics or Flagyl, then when you come of the abx, slowly, and I mean slowly, taper down to recommended dosage for a while. After several months, work down to a maintenance dosage of about 1 per day. I take at least 1 type of three different probiotics everyday, and if I go on abx I double or triple them.

I have also been taking Florastor for about 10 months and have been off of Vanco for 7 months. I now take 2 per day (took more when I first came off the meds), but will probably drop down to one at some point soon. I don't think I'll stop taking it anytime soon though.
I would definitely suggest taking it.
Good luck!

I was on Florastor on a blind study when it was still S. boulardii -- then on compassionate usage for two years. Didn't hurt or help me, but it has helped some. Unforotuantely, C. diff. is a very individual disease & what works for some doesn't work for others.
