I was listening to NPR the other day and somebody mentioned antibiotic tainted fish from China... hmmm. Well, I did some snooping and it turns out the episode occurred in '07 but the FDA still only checks .6% of foods imported into this country - according to the former head of the FDA. As it turns out, shrimp, catfish, tilapia and other farmed fish from China had been tained with fluoroquinolones. We forbid any food products contain this antibiotic (cipro and some others) because it's so essential that it be effective, and in small doses bacteria easily form resistance. I cannot tell you how much fish and shrimp I've eaten at Chinese buffets and farmed tilapia from the store over the years. It really makes you wonder, not that we don't have a big problem with over prescribing of antibiotics on top of that.

This poor man. I remember too well some of what he describes. I wonder how accurately we here could answer the questions at the end......
