New here and a bit fearful

Postby Suezer » Wed Jan 21, 2009 12:43 am

I was taking Augmentin for a sinus infection about a month ago, then last week started Omnicef for the same thing. On the 5th day of the Omnicef, I started getting the cramping..I though that perhaps my UC was back-after 10 years of remission.
Well I had to call in from work on the next day due to I was having alot of severe cramping and a bit of soft stool. I ate nothing but some dry toast, and the next day I seemed fine.

Today is day 4, and when I got to work the cramping and D was unbearable and I started to notice mucus and blood.

It scared me,so I went to my Dr. and they sent me home with a "kit". Within 2 hours I took the kit and my specimen in , I am told it can take up to 48 hours to confirm if I have C diff.

I am nervous, I mean does this infection go to a severe state quickly, or will I be ok until I get the results.
I am drinking alot of gatorade, havent ate much in 4 days. I have no fever atm.

Since I had awful Ulcerative Colitis years ago, I am scared that this infection,if I have it will be the worse form..

Thank you for any shared thoughts.
(I have read all the things for new readers/posters ect :)

Hey you should be ok until you get your results. If they do turn out to be negative, I would insist on a scope because you would not want to treat c-diff with steriods. There are many false negatives with the stool test and a scope is more accurate. This way you can confirm what you have is indeed c-diff or a UC flare up. Considering you just took two very powerful antibiotics, it seems likely that you have developed c-diff. Some doctors begin a treatment of flagyl based on the symptoms before results come in.

Unless your frequency increases so much that you cannot keep youself dehydrated, or develop a high fever, you should be ok until your results come in.

Thanks for the reply.
I have been drinking alot of gatorade, and am urinating normally, so I dont think I am totally dehydrated. Still no fever. I will finally try to go to sleep and see what tomorrow brings. Thanks again.

Suezer,

Standard Introduction
Welcome to the site. Read the first forum ALL USERS READ THIS FIRST & its subtopics – especially the announcements: PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU POST and GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO OUR DISCUSSION BOARDS. They will guide you in using the site & answer some of the most frequent questions. Read Dr. Borody’s & Dr. McDonald’s articles and some of the topics in FAQ – especially Hygiene, Nutrition, & Testing.

The majority (almost 80%) recovers with one to two rounds of Flagyl or Vancocin, but an unlucky small percentage does not and can suffer for months. Everyone eventually recovers, however, unless other factors are involved (advanced age, other severe health problems). If you do have C diff. & the antibiotics contributed to it, be careful about taking them again. (See FAQ-Antibiotics.) Some people can tolerate them without a problem; some develop C. diff. again. (See Dr. Borody’s article.)

Questions
You can have antibiotic-related diarhea without it being C. diff. Wait & see what the tests show. Since you haven't been treated with Flagyl or Vanco. (meds. for C. diff.), the results should be more accurate than if you'd already been on them.

If you do have C. diff. & since you've had GI problems in the past, I'd see a specialist as soon as possible -- either a GI or an ID -- and make sure they are knowledgable about C. diff.

Smart to keep yourself hydrated. Your symptoms (heart racing, etc.) could be from stress, but check with your doctor.

I just got the call from my Dr. and I have tested positive for C diff, I will start on Flagyl today, I am hopeful that this will improve things, this is like a hell, I am off work until these awful cramping and bouts of D stop. I really would rather be working/healthy :/

I also wondered what did most people eat at this phase? I am 5 days into this. I have been barely eating, mostly a peice of dry toast, a small bit of apple sause or some saltines. .

Hi Suezer,

So sorry that your test came back positive. Hopefully you will get over this quickly, many do, they just don't always make it to posting on the board.
What you are eating sounds fine. I found little and often helped. I moved onto the BRAT diet when D settled down. Stay away from dairy and high sugars. Yoghurt is okay though. Initially I stuck with a liquid diet until the meds kicked in. Be aware though, Flagyl can make you feel even more lousy. You may not feel like eating but must remain hydrated. Feeling out of it, and very sleepy is quite common, just make sure it's the meds and not dehydration. I hope Flagyl agrees with you but if not at least you know it's quite normal and try not to worry.

Tearful kind of comes with c-diff, I remember alot of crying, that too is normal. Just be good to yourself. You are too sick to go to work, this is not a time to try and do things at home. Rest & Drink Lots!!

Big Hugs

Jenny

Oops, you said fearful not tearful. I found all the information on this site helped a great deal. It's natural to fear what we do not know or understand. Hope you find all the answers you need to get to grips with this (and strangle it)!

Take Care

Jenny

Ok I took the first dose, noticing I am feeling a bit out of it suddenly, woozy - Like I have been drugged, (no other way to describe)

Didnt expect to notice anything so fast, but I will let it do its work with me, and hope I get used to its effects.

First of all I would like to "Welcome" you to the group. I just want to add to what Vike said. For me the side effects from taking Flagyl were almost worse then CDiff! I had just about every side effect listed, I had fevers, hot flashes, heart palps, dizzy. You name it I had it, since it is your first dose my advice to you is to keep a eye on things. If things get really bad and you get more and more of the side effects call your Dr and let him/her know.

Good Luck and keep us updated we are all here for you.

Thanks again,everyone; for the support

Can anyone tell me if advil is irritating or so with C diff ? I have a real bad headache since taking the flagyl, it runs up the side of my head, sort of odd, but bothersome to say the least. I dont mean to post so much , I am just so unfamiliar to all of this and the input so far has been greatly appreciated.

Advil (Ibuprofen) can cause stomach upset/irritation. Google it and you'll see some info on it. I can't take it, but I handle Tylenol ok.

Follow this hyperlink...it reads:

"Ibuprofen should be taken under close medical supervision by people prone to irritation of the stomach and intestines, particularly those who have had a stomach ulcer, bloody stools, or diverticulosis or other inflammatory disease of the stomach or intestines (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease). In these cases, your doctor must weigh the benefits of treatment against the possible risks."

I hope you get through this soon and don't have to take it for very long!

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I did take one advil, the headache is really irritating, it seemed to help for a bit, I did get through the first hour after taking the first pill,I felt horrible, but seemed to feel better after 2-3 hours. I just took 2nd pill, waiting..hoping not to get that awful feeling like I did with the first dose.

I dont know if it is recommended but I did manage to eat a bit of yogurt, not alot, but it tasted better than the saltines I live on now.

A bit of anxiety, I guess it goes with the territory.
