Don’t understand what’s going on

Postby justdone » Wed Nov 29, 2023 9:34 pm

Hello all,

It’s been a long time since I’ve been here. I search here off and on for other experiences but I can’t find anything like mine. I have been c. diff free for about 7 years now but my stomach has a persistent issue. I don’t understand what’s causing this and it has gotten worse in the last few weeks. I thought this was just a post effect and it would pass with time but it hasn’t. If I eat anything sugary, any kind of bread, pasta, rice, chips, or anything like this I go through this cycle of feeling like I’m freezing as my food is digesting throughout the day. Like I’m trembling as if it’s 30 degrees in my 70 degree apartment. I’ll also be lightly sweating at the same time. Then overnight, I’ll break out into an intense hot flash that last hours (usually while I’m sleeping.) I wake up in the a.m. and I’m warm and feverish and realize I was sweating so bad while asleep. Once I have a BM in the morning, my body will return to a normal temperature until I eat again and the process starts all over again. It’s so frustrating and uncomfortable. And I’ll notice my BM is basically bright yellow once I’ve gone to the restroom but I don’t have active c.diff. If I avoid these foods or keep them minimum, I experience a much lesser version of this but it never goes away. It’s almost like something in my gut bacteria is feeding off the refined flour or sugar, overgrowing, and causing mayhem until I eventually go to the restroom. Maybe even altering the flora in my BM until it’s passed through my system. I’ve taken VSL#3, kefir, florastor for years and the problem persists. During my initial recovery, I asked a GI and he had no idea. He did a stool test and said everything appeared normal. I’m 39 and it’s not menopause. What it seems like is happening, is that my flora goes completely off balance after eating any kind of flour or bread and my body freaks out.

I see most people that recover can return to a relatively normal diet. For me, if it’s not meat and vegetables only, I’m physically suffering until I use the bathroom. Has anyone ever experienced this post-c. diff? What can I do to make this better? We have to eat some amount of carb to stay healthy. I’m at a loss.

I had issues a bit like this even when testing negative. My feeling was that it was still lurking but at an undetectable level. They told me that wasn’t possible but a few months ago a consultant told me 10% of people test negative even when it’s still there. When I had my FMT after yet another relapse all of those lingering issues went away so I’m sure I was right. Have you considered a comprehensive stool test? One which shows potentially pathogenic microbes. You can then use herbs and diet to target.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. You know, I think I recall having a comprehensive panel done a long time ago during recovery and I remember the panel said pathogen found but inactive or something like that. And my GI didn’t seem concerned and said I was clear. Maybe because it was inactive. So I wonder if this is my issue. I’m going to find a new GI and schedule an appointment. It won’t hurt to have a new test done just to see what’s lurking.

The color is suggestive of transit time or perhaps malabsorbtion. Is there a more specialized GI you can see that deals with motility or allergy. Sometimes university hospitals have these types of doctors. I have seen a motility specialist in Los Angeles. I was diagnosed with SIBO.

Typical symptoms of glutton intolerance or coeliac disease.
Get tested.

Interesting. I’ll definitely bring all of these up to my doctor and ask to be tested for each. I appreciate everyone’s feedback on this.
