Reocurrence

Postby Mandy1 » Sun Apr 18, 2021 4:35 pm

So my story is incredibly weird and I'm just looking for some advice because I just so tired of this reocurrence.
I never had GI issues before this year besides my intolerances to citrus fruits and too much leafy greens.
In January, I had COVID symptoms and was tested. I had to wait a few days for the results but the doctor put me on Amoxicillin because the symptoms were also similar to a sinus infection.
So I took the Amox for 4 days because once my COVID test came back positive, the doc took me off the antibiotics but the damage had already been done. I started having loose stools and some watery diarrhea which the doc thought was a side effect of COVID. At the beginning of February, I was tested for C Diff along with other bacteria and anything else that could cause gut issues including Celiac disease.
Test came back negative yet I still had loose stools and was not able to eat the foods I normally eat. So basically I was living on the BRAT diet plus some chicken breast at dinner. My GI specialist scheduled an endoscopy/colonoscopy at the beginning of March. He took a stool sample and tested it and of course it came back positive for C Diff so he started me on a 14 day prescription of Flagyl. I started feeling better and actually was able to add crackers to my diet which helped out. After the 14 day run, I felt better for 2 days. I developed symptoms again, took another test, positive again, so went on a 14 day prescription of Vancomycin. This helped more than Flagyl and I was able to add eggs, cooked carrots, and steamed green beans to my diet. I actually felt great for a week after finishing the Vancomycin.
However, I am currently experiencing the mucus and loose stools which is a concern considering my stools started going back to normal. The doctor and dietician are trying to rule out C Diff so I got another test done and I'm awaiting results. The other causes may be food intolerance since I started eating oatmeal a few days ago at the request of the dietician but have stopped; menstruation which wreaks havoc on my GI system every month; and good old fashioned stress from working in an assisted living facility where I am actually at risk of catching C Diff.
Now I am just super stressed and depressed. I cannot seem to find anything to be cheerful about. I have lost almost 25lbs. My diet consists of 4 small throughout the day:
6:30am - rice Chex and a banana
10am - saltine crackers, applesauce, and 2 Florastor probiotic capsules
11:30am - 2 Egglands Best eggs and 3 pcs of dry toast (white bread)
2pm - rice Chex and a banana with half a multivitamin tablet
Then dinner between 6 and 7pm: 4oz chicken breast (no skin), 1oz chicken thigh (no skin), 1/2 cup green beans, 1 cup white rice, and 1 cup low sodium organic chicken broth.
I drink more than a gallon of water a day and 20 oz of Gatorade.

I am extremely frustrated and cannot find any coping mechanisms that will work to relieve the anxiety. Any advice would be so helpful. I am so exhausted, mentally physically and emotionally.

Mandy1, sorry to hear you contracted C-diff and hope you are just having a bad day. For how many days have you been experiencing the mucus and loose stools? hopefully, it is not a relapse, but if it is, I would ask dr for Dificid. Flagyl is no longer used and recommended for the C Diff. It was dropped off the list of meds for C diff Dec of 2017. Vanco and Difcid are mainly used for the C Diff now. I had an FTM 9 months ago and I am still having loose bowels most of the days but no mucus.
Male 54, contracted C-Diff on Feb 5, 2020, diagnosed on March 2nd, Took Flagyl for 8 days, Vanco for 10 days, relapsed 5 weeks post-Vanco. finished Dificid Taper on June 20 relapsed two weeks later, had the FMT on July 14th, 2020

Hi Mandy and welcome to the site. You can find more information for new posters in the first forum.

As Ali-Mar said, Flagyl is not recommended for c difficile and can actually give you worse GI symptoms. Vancomycin upset my GI tract as well. I did not tolerate Florastor well either. You might try to cut back on it and see if it alleviates some of the symptoms. What type of milk do you use with the Rice Chex? I had to switch to rice milk, as I no longer was able to tolerate dairy. Bananas also did not agree with me nor did multi-vitamin tablets - even the children's ones. Chicken is good. You might try turkey or fish to vary. Baked potato is usually well tolerated as well. I took Pepto Bismol for a while with my main meals per doctor's instructions and it helped me.

I had the mucus for only a few days. It seems as if it has decreased over the past couple days. I did not have any mucus today, just gas. Abdominal pain and gas, especially overnight to the point where I couldn't sleep.
I'm wondering if maybe the gas is from a combination of the food and the Florastor. I know Florastor is known to cause gas and bloating.
I actually do not use any type of milk with my rice Chex. My GI specialist is having me take it super slow. My dietician is in agreement. Once the test results come back, then we can move forward.
The first few months of 2021 have been super crazy for me. I have never really had any health problems before this year so all the recent health issues have just made my life hectic.
