Vanco taper preparation / question

Postby ColeB » Fri Jan 17, 2020 2:54 pm

Hi, per my previous post today I’m still waiting it out but since it’s Friday I want to be prepared tomorrow / Sunday in case it gets worse. (Quick summary- finished 10 day vanco 9 days ago. By 2nd day on vanco I had solid BMs in fact best / biggest I’ve ever had. Day 8 after vanco had 3 loose BMs and 1 mucus only BM. Day 9 post vanco I’ve had 5 BMs; all very loose but not WD.)

My doctor is pretty approachable to my ideas- when I request vanco taper, is there a typical protocol to follow? This would by my first relapse (if in fact I relapse- still plan on waiting)

Also, I assume vanco taper should be my request? I looked up dificid and it’s 4grand for 20 pills!!!!

Vancomycin 125 mg 4 times a day for 14 days then 3 times a day for 7 days BID for 7 days, then QD for 7 days then every every other day for 4 doses, then every 3rd day for 3 doses. #105

This is what doc sent me.. is this in line? BID is 2x I think and QD is 1x

That's in line with what others have done.
What does vanco cost where you are?

okay. still planning on waiting it out. does anyone know if D1Dad still posts? curious how his recovery "rough days" were since he just had this.

Vanco for 10 days, 40 pills is exactly $100 for me. some pharmacies its $300 but through Good RX its $100

Good decision.
I am guessing you qualify for Tiawan subsidized health care ( vanco full cost is mega bucks) so it might be possible to get dificid at the same cost.
A taper course of vanco unsubsidised is not far off the cost of 10 days of dificid.
It might be called Dificlir or fidaxomycin in Taiwan.
it's worth having a plan B but with average luck you wont need it.
Send D1dad a PM, he will get an email telling him you made contact.

Roy, I think you might be confusing me with another poster. I live in Kansas and work for the US’s largest privately held company. Our insurance is Blue Cross.

FYI the Vanco taper is $220

If I could get 10 days of dificid vs trying the long vanco taper, it seems that would be the preferred / more successful route? Is that fair?

Sorry for the confusion.
Many posters say dificid worked after vanco failed but most studies claim it as equal if it's not used as the first treatment.
it does seem to be better but theres no "official" statistics yet.

Oh nice, go Chiefs! I have a lot of family there and go there often. Do you have a Dr you recommend there? I need to go read your story!

Edit Bobbie could you link me to your story? Because you have 629 pages of posts it’ll be tough to find

ColeB.

I see Jeff Young, MD (GI) and John Fried (ID). Both practice in Overland Park.

My case history is a mess. The site was hacked years ago, and my story was garbled. See "by Guest » Thu Sep 02, 2004 12:55" in Case Histories. I've worked on the site since 1999 and updated it twice. Too long!

Go,Chiefs!!!
