Staph

Postby AnxiousJ » Fri Oct 04, 2019 3:20 pm

I am 3.5 yrs post c diff and saw my podiatrist on Tuesday due to an infected toe. She believes it is a mild staph (she think staph epidermis) and prescribed topical Gentamicin 2-3x a day for 7 days. She did not do a culture bc she felt it may be too invasive and potentially worsen it. No pus and no abcsess but VERY pink at first. I have seen her before and she knows my history. The day before I was I was at Walgreens and the NP there thought it was paronychia and gave me Mupirocin which I used 3x until I saw my podiatrist who had me discontinue Mupirocin and start topical Gentamicin. I have had formed but loose stools 2-3 times a day since Tuesday. I did speak (email) with the C dIff specialist's nurse yesterday. He contacted the specialist who said it is highly unlikely that what I took would cause another infection. I think it is most likely IBS or nerves but I am a little nervous. It is not WD but loose. In your personal opinion, would you test or wait a few more days?

I would listen to the what the specialist said and try to stay calm. It is likely your nerves else IBS. Try not to worry. I would not test.

Agree with Rita. See the Three Day Rule.

Try the three day rule.

Remember , the three day rule is not medical info but a rule of thumb to help get through the wait, watch, and worry stages of c diff.

To repeat:

Have u heard of the three-day rule? I made it up many years ago. It is a "rule of thumb" that can be helpful.

The Three Day Rule: Don't be alarmed by mild symptoms unless you have three "bad" days in a row or if your symptoms become drastically worse. If this happens, call your doctor. Please remember, this is just a guideline to use when you panic after one or two bad days and think, "Oh, IT'S back."

If it is staoh, Vanco should work, with

Relax.

I have used Mupirocin often with no issues. I have not used Gentamycin, but I doubt that applying it to your toe would cause c diff to resurface. Topical clindamycin is a different matter and I would not use that under any circumstances again.

Gentamycin is a low offender in pill form , if it's used topical should be more safe.

Anxious,
I am very prone to c diff - 3 bouts - first lasted 4 yrs.. I have used gentamycin several times as a nasal wash for resp infections without causing c diff,

Check with your doc. Best wishes.
