Clindamycin cream

Hello,

I have a pilonidal cyst that is flaring up and my GI doctor (same doc that treated my cdiff) said that he would prescribe a clindamycine cream if I had this issue again. He said it does not effect the bacteria levels the same way as the oral and should be OK.

I am happy to say that I have been 2 years clear of cdiff and feel that my health is pretty good. So, I am really nervous about going down this path again.

Is there anyone that has used a clindamycine cream and not had cdiff issues afterwards? Does anyone know of some better options?

Antibiotics are not used to treat that type of cyst.

Looking at your old posts it's clear your Dr treated you on test results alone and not because of c.diff symptoms.
Not the best of decisions!
Now that Dr might prescribe an antibiotic for a condition that antibiotics are not normaly used for.
As for can clindamycin cream cause c.diff?
Look at the pack insert, it clearly states that it can!
Its absorbed through the skin, goes into the blood, gets filtered by the liver and gets dumped into the colon.
Only a small amount but it's enough to disturb the good gut flora.

Roy, yes you are correct the PA was treating me for test results and not symptoms. After a lot of fighting to get messages to the doctor he put a stop to it and got the symptoms under control. Thank goodness.

I was reading some mixed side effects of the topical. Some say "rare" some say "likely" so was hoping to see if anyone has some experience with it. Because all antibiotics from what I understand have some cdiff risks.

I am thinking a Dermatologist or General doc might be a better doc for this situation but need something soon and specialists in my area are very difficult to get into. I can email my GI doc and get something within a few days. And we discussed the PC at my last visit.

I read that excision of a PC is a long and difficult way to heal. The last time I had this the clindamycin actually did a good job getting rid of it quickly but then spent the next year getting symptoms of cdiff under control. Guess I have to pick lesser of two evils.

We have had posters here due to using the topical clindamycin. It is the ONE antibiotic to avoid. Possibly see a colorectal surgeon. That would be best for this issue . I am not suggesting surgery, but it is their specialty and a consult might be a good idea especially if it's something you have had in the past.

This only the second time to have a flair up. Was told by a surgeon to leave alone if it is not bothersome. May have to get a follow up.

Clindamycin cream was implicated in my getting c difficile. I will never use it again. Even way before c diff, I used some topical clindamycin for acne and got D. Dermatologist said to stop immediately, so yes,it can affect your gut, even though it is topical.
