Hi all.
I am 25, male, 210 lbs, 5’9, white.
2 weeks ago I had sharp stabbing pain below my belly button. It would come and go in waves of about 10 seconds. It felt like I was being stabbed. It turned into an aching pain in that area that transitioned into my right abdomen, love-handle, and lower right back flank.
This week I developed:
* nausea
* excessive diarrhea (worst of my life)
* loss of appetite
* weakness and fatigue
* disorientation
* stomach pains/cramps/growling/rumbling. Felt like I was dying lol.
**I went to the ER and they diagnosed me with C Difficile. My CT scan showed mesenteric adenitis with a normal appendix, so it seems this is consistent with a C. difficile infection.**
They’ve prescribed me 10 days of 500mg Flagyl taken 3x daily.
I’m a little nervous because I know this can get really really bad if not taken care of. I’ve started my prescribed medication but apparently Flagyl can potentially cause C. difficile as well?
My doctors want me on Flagyl now and will only entertain Vancomycin oral/IV if the Flagyl doesn’t work. I don't think they know yet that Flagyl is second line now.
* Does anyone have ANY kind of advice for me other than to listen to my doctor? Words of wisdom?
* Should I be getting more tests done after rounds of antibiotics? I’m so very confused with what all I should be doing and expecting.
* What probiotics should I be taking?
Apparently I’ve developed an umbilical hernia that wasn’t there beforehand either.
Is there anything you know now from your own journeys that I should know?
Thanks.
Newly Diagnosed for the first time.

Re: Newly Diagnosed for the first time.
First , let me welcome you to the site , read the first forum for more information for new posters.
You need to see a specialist , make a appointment with a GI or a infectios disease doctor , someone who has knowledge about this infection. Flagyl is no longer a first line treatment , not FDA approved for Cdiff .Vancomycin is the drug of first choice and if that doesn't cure the infection Dificid is the second line of treatment.
After antibiotics are finished , testind to prove that you are cures is not recommended as it often leads to over treatment or if you test too soon it might be false negative.A cure should be considered by symptoms and occasional loose stool is not uncommon, as long as it's not profuse WD .
A bland diet is advised , eat easy to digest food and gradually add more foods back into your diet as your gut starts to heal. See CDI-nutrition
Probiotics might help you , most people are doing well with florastor .Is a yeast probiotic that can be taken along with the antibiotics for Cdiff. From my personal experince with probiotics , i found one the is spore based , called Megasporebiotic that helped me more then any other probiotic i've tried.It's kinda pricey but for me it's worth every penny.

Hey thanks for replying. I plan on seeing a specialist but wanted to ask: I understand the stance on Flagyl has changed, but is it still a potential cure? I'm hoping I won't have too long of a journey.

They did. So all of the symptoms I listed above were all week.
I continued to have diarrhea this morning but I haven't pooped yet since I started Flagyl, unsure if it'll be good or bad. I'm currently just getting stomach growling/rumbling and pain below my belly button. Some appetite has returned today

Re: Newly Diagnosed for the first time.
Its confusing when you say you have constipation and diarrhea on the same day!
If you have c.diff you wont need a laxative.

Don't take anything to force your transit . It's normal to have a day or two without stool after several days of D. Just maintain a easy to digest diet , and lots of liquids , also add a probiotic.

York,
Have you been on antibiotics (aside from the Flagyl) lately?

Re: Newly Diagnosed for the first time.
I've been on a lottt of antibiotics over the last 2 years unfortunately. But more recently I was on Bactrim for 3 days before I discontinued due to side effects, and then this hit me the week after.
