Question on diet

Postby mathewb » Mon Mar 18, 2019 8:41 pm

I’m learning a lot on this road with c diff. But one thing that new for me is I can’t eat anything but oatmeal. I’m still not sure if bananas are safe for me, but I think it is. I have posted a few times in the past few weeks- I am a 36 year old female and was treated for c diff twice (once in January with Flagyl and once in February with oral vanc). I am seeing a specialist on Wednesday because starting this past weekend, I have been going to the bathroom at least 4 to 5x a day. Today I was up to 7x. I can stop it with oatmeal- seems to calm things down. But I can barely eat anything else. I tried peppermint tea a little while ago, but still not sure if that will be ok. The past two times I was treated I didn’t have it this bad. I could still eat bland foods. This time even white bread is passing right through me. Is this normal? I am taking two probiotics - Florastor and Trubiotics (my body likes this one for a long time now). I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’m trying to learn as much as possible on what I should eat.

It could be your probiotics. I did not tolerate them well at all after treatment. But, ask your doctor and ask to be re-tested for c difficile as well as for other pathogens. There are other bacteria that can cause problems too. I had campylobacter and the symptoms were very similar to c difficile. Some people have had intolerance to gluten. If you do, then the white bread would be a problem. I would write a list of questions to ask your doctor so you don't forget.

Thank you Beth. I was so focused on C diff that I didn't think of anything else. But yes, my symptoms are different this time. Both times before, I could avoid dairy and that would help my symptoms. This time, pretty much anything I eat is bothering me. Gluten could be part of all this. My stool is also different in color- much lighter ( sorry if that is TMI).

Hi there. I’m newly off a vanco taper and have noticed being more sensitive to foods. I seem to tolerate plain oatmeal as well. Bone broth seems to help so far too. I sip it and make soups with potatoes, carrots, celery, and sometimes rice or gluten free noodles. Plain chicken seems to be ok too. Try that perhaps. I get my bone broth from Costco and they have both chicken and beef.

I definitely agree with Beth about the probiotics. Some people can only tolerate one or cannot tolerate a particular brand.
Stool color is fine unless it is red or black.
Try bananas. They might help.
This happened to me. For me it was severe PI IBS. I was eventually prescribed Questran as things- for me- continued to get worse over a period of months, but not at the beginning. This might not be the case for you so it is good you are seeing the dr to rule out other causes.

Let us know how you do.
