Tenesmus Remedies

Postby TedGil » Tue Feb 26, 2019 3:39 pm

I know allot of you have had Tenesmus throughout the course of healing. I am almost 60 days in since my last day of Vanco but I am still struggling with Tenesmus. Mostly just the feeling that I have to go and nothing comes out or just little pencil BMs. I have had it for awhile buy only has been really bad in the last 3 weeks or so. I have one formed stool a day so I am not totaling constipated. I have been using Preparation H with Lidocaine at night which seems to help somewhat. But my GI said that it is OK to use but not long-term because you might get sensitized. He also told me to take Magnesium Oxide which would also help keep things moving.

Anyways, it is keeping me up at night, hard to concentrate at work and a great source of anxiety. It is literally driving me crazy!!!!! I don't have stomach cramps or nausea, no blood, mucus or anything although the stools are pencil like and I do have gas. Again my GI says he needs to do a Colonoscopy to see what is going on which is something I am a little cautious about.

Any suggestions? Will this eventually go away? Any sleeping hints?

I would go and see a colon and rectal specialist (formerly called proctologists). The doctor can look in with a small scope to see if there is inflammation or what is going on and perhaps give you a different cream or ointment. I saw one in the early days of c diff recovery and the doctor was helpful.

I've had tenesmus as well in my recovery period, plus some bleeding. I've seen a rectal specialist who checked and there was nothing wrong with my back side. The appointment was a pain in the butt though, literally.
What helped me is when I stopped using toilet paper and started using baby (wet) wipes instead. With that, tenesmus subsided significantly. I was probably wiping too diligently and irritated my poor behind, which has been through so much around that time period, it couldn't take it any more. Luckily, wet wipes helped me a lot. Maybe you should try that.
