Blood on Stool

Postby LHutz » Thu Jan 10, 2019 2:17 am

I finished my round of Vancoymcin 20 days ago. Overall, I'm feeling much better than when I had an active infection. I've experienced some bowel irritability since finishing Vancomycin, but I attributed it to Florastor. After I stopped Florarstor a few days ago, I began to feel much better.

Tonight I noticed blood on my stool for the first time since I had an active infection. My stool was formed and it was about a 4 on the Bristol Stool Chart. I also now have some slight discomfort in my lower left abdomen, but not nearly as bad as when I had an active C. Diff infection. Is bloody stool a common occurrence during recovery, or is it usually a sign of a C. Diff infection recurrence?

If it is bright red blood it could be a fissure or hemorrhoids, but if it continues, tell your doctor.

Yes, it was bright red--the same as it was when I had an active C. Diff infection.

I didn't see any mucus, just a little bright red blood. Last time I saw mucus was more than a week ago.

If it continues, tell the doctor, but if you don't have D it is probably not c diff.

I would probably go and see a colon and rectal specialist (used to be called proctologist). He or she can look in the rectal area and see if you have any fissures, etc. If there is a fissure, for example, that can also cause M or any kind of irritation. But, do let your doctor know.

Just an update, I messaged my doctor and he said he thought the blood was likely from hemorrhoids but told me to follow up if the blood continues.

I had BM on January 10 and did not notice any blood.

Tonight I had another BM with bright red blood. There was more blood than the previous bloody BM and when I wiped there was a lot of bright red blood on the toilet paper. The BM was formed though, not D. Then about an hour and a half later I had to go again and this time it was just blood and maybe some mucus too but I didn't see any stool.

I'm fearing a recurrence or some other major issue with my GI tract. I'll see how I feel tomorrow and I'll message my doctor.

Blood on the stool is diferent from blood IN the stool.
Blood on is picked up on the way out and is likely to be hems.
Blood in is damage further up.
Get a Dr to take a look (they love that job) and treat from his diagnosis.

As far as I can tell, the blood was on the outside of the stool, which is probably why my doctor thinks it's likely hemorrhoids. He says I should monitor it and if it continues I should see him. I'm fairly certain it's not a C. Diff recurrence though. It's scary seeing all that blood though.
