My symptoms are different

Postby Shel » Sun Oct 07, 2018 12:14 am

After a yr of drs trying to figure out my problem I have been diagnosed with c diff. Flagyl for a week from convenient care and then my doctor switched me to a week of Vanco 4 xs a day after Flagyl was finished. Seemed better for a few weeks and then felt it was back and I tested positive again. Now on 14 days of Vanco 4 xs a day and then a tapered schedule after that. My question is that my symptoms are nothing like most mention. No weight loss, no stomach pain, no really watery diarrhea. In fact they always say my sample might be rejected cuz it’s not watery but yet it comes back positive. My symptoms are itchy anus after a bowel movement, just a general not normal feeling in the butt and a feeling of needing to head back to the bathroom 10 minutes or so after going to rewipe and usually getting a few more dots of feces when I rewipe even though I was perfectly clean when I left the bathroom. I just feel my issues don’t relate at all to what other c diff users experience, am I right? Should I push for a GI dr? I’m seeing an infectious disease dr now and he’s the one that added the taper to my current Vanco prescription, prescribed a cream for itching called clotrimazole and wants me to start Floristar to. Just curious if anyone else has my symptoms with c diff?

Hi Shel, welcome to the site. Please read our guidelines for new posters, first entry on the intro page, when you have a chance.

Your doctor should be treating symptoms, not test results. And you're correct that what you describe doesn't fit the C. diff profile. I think you could benefit from another medical opinion, as you yourself suggest. Some of the issues that you mention might be better addressed by a colorectal specialist.

Flagyl is no longer the first-line treatment for C. diff, by the way. If any doctor tries to give you Flagyl for a presumed diagnosis of C. diff in the future, you should reject it.
If your illness was preceded by use of a medication, e.g., an antibiotic, please fill out an FDA Adverse Event Report at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm

5% of adults and 75% of infants would test positive for c.diff.
C.diff is a normal gut bacteria, very common and is only a disease if it overgrows and causes D!
Trying to eradicate c.diff that is not causing symptoms is probably impossible and potentialy harmful.
The main cause of it becoming a disease is using antibiotics that damage the flora that keeps it from over growing.
So far you have been lucky, the antibiotics you have been taking could have damaged your natural gut flora and increased the risk of it turning into a disease.
Tests do not say c.diff is causing illness, only symptoms prove that.
Solid stool is rejected for testing to protect the patient from exactly what has happened to you, being treated when it's not a disease!
Your Dr and the labs have ignored the rules the experts put in place to protect you from being misdiagnosed.
Result is probably a misdiagnosis and potential harmful treatment with strong medication.
Seek expert medical advice.
