Despite buying the chlorine wipes that are supposed to be effective against C diff spores and using them everywhere, my husband has been starting to get the same symptoms I had in the beginning. I am on day 14 of my Flagyll treatment and although not having D as much, I am still having cramping. I'm afraid the Flagyll didn't work and will have a quick relapse of full blown symptoms. We are an older couple (husband is 62) but still have a child at home with no nearby family to help out. I don't know what we will do if we both get really sick with this. Has anyone else's family members caught this from someone in the household? If someone who hasn't been on antibiotics catches it (like my husband), does this mean that this is a more virulent, harder to treat form of C diff?
Sorry for sounding panicked. I am.
61 years old,

It's unlikely that you spread c.diff to your husband.
You mentioned you had classic symptoms but have not mentioned a stool test.
Did the Dr order a test or just diagnose on symptoms?

Roy, I had a test which was positive for Toxin A. I have been on the Flagyl for 14 days and coming off of them tomorrow. If my husband gets worse he will go in and get tested tomorrow.

Re: Really worried/Afraid husband has caught this from me
Hi, in the time I’ve been on this board I’ve only seen a couple instances of family members developing active c Diff within a short time frame of the poster, and only one case from what I recall that did not involve the family member(s) taking an antibiotic. So I can’t say it’s impossible, but that it is rare.
My current GI doc says active c Diff infection occurs in people with dysbiosis. Period. That it does not have to do with the strain. I don’t know if I believe that or not! But she insists this is true.
I had 3 recurrences and was cured with an FMT. With this ordeal, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Always have your next plan of care worked out with your doctor in case your infection recurs. Just always be prepared, and it will help with the anxiety and fear. Also, just so you are aware do not take Flagyl for a second treatment. Only Vanco or Dificid. You can look up current IDSA recommendations for that info.

Thank you, MKW. Very helpful information. I will let everyone know if his test comes back positive. I know it would be highly unusual so I am hoping it is just a stomach bug.

It is unusual for a family member to get this, but not unheard of.

Re: Really worried/Afraid husband has caught this from me
My family experienced an endemic outbreak but I have found only a few other families who have had a similar experience to mine, a family in Utah, a family in New Jersey, a family in New York, and a family in Florida (theirs was strep-antibiotic related).

Do you know what type of test they run?
Toxin A mentioned alone is an unusual result.

Roy, it's fuzzy to read on the report but it says BD Max C difficile assay and PCR. and A was the only toxin listed that I was positive for.
Could you explain why it would be unusual to just be "A"?
Thank you very much for your help.

Because a PCR test ONLY tests for toxin B!
The BD MAX part is only the tests manufacturers name.

Re: Really worried/Afraid husband has caught this from me
Roy this is what my results look like I guess I misinterpreted what the A means under flag.
Normal was left blank, Abnormal "detected" Range "not detected" Units, left blank and Info PL3
I don't know what the A means or the PL3. What do you think those mean?
This is what it looks like:
Normal Abnormal Flag Range Units Info
Detected A Not Detected PL3
Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.
I checked out your link and my results didn't go into all that detail as the ones in the link.

Re: Really worried/Afraid husband has caught this from me
BD MAX is a machine that's used for quite a few different tests and should print out a report that says one of the following if it is set up to do a C.diff test.
I would be checking with the lab.
I can't find anything about PL3.
Assay Result Reported Interpretation of Result
Cdiff POS tcdB gene DNA detected
Cdiff NEG No tcdB gene DNA detected
Cdiff UNR Unresolved – no target or Sample Processing Control amplification, inhibitory
specimen or reagent failure
IND Indeterminate result due to BD MAX System failure
(with Warning or Error Codesb)
INC Incomplete Run
(with Warning or Error Codesb)

Thank you Roy. I will try to get in touch with the lab.
