Possible UTI

Postby AnxiousJ » Mon Dec 11, 2017 6:05 pm

I'm almost 2 years out from having c diff and have tested neg since April 2016. I've had a dull pain in my lower back and lower abdomen for a few days. I was going to see my PCP on Fri but decided to wait to see if it continued. It did and I saw the nurse today. She checked my urine and there was a moderate amount of microscopic blood. She is sending it out for a culture and I should hear by Thursday or possibly Friday am. I will continue to drink as much water as I can between now and then. Does this sound like a probable uti or is it possible to have moderate blood with no uti? My father is 75 and has had hematuria off an on since he was in his 30's and has seen many specialists. They keep an eye on it often. I believe it is called familial hematuria. I've been taking 1 Florastor and 1 VSL3 for a long time but am worried that if I need an antibiotic, the probiotic may not protect me as I've taken them for such a long time. Would taking daily probiotics that lessen the effect of probiotics when they are truly needed?

If there is any concern with hematuria, I would see a urologist. It's good she sent it out for a Culture but if it did not have any white cells, infection is not likely. As far as a probiotic, the one thing several of us do take on the site is D mannose. It's a supplement that prevent Ecoli adhering to the bladder so UTI's are less likely. It has worked great for me.

Talk with your doctor about the hematuria when the culture comes back. They also can give an accurate count of RBC's if the UA was sent to the lab for a routine UA also.

Thank you, Nanci. Would they be able to tell if there are any WBC just from the urine dip in the doctor's office? I thought that can only come from a culture. I will ask about seeing a urologist tomorrow. Is the D manose a probiotic? I know this isn't a medical site, but would it be helpful( in your opinion) to start it now or is it too late?

Would the fact that I've been on good quality probiotics for so long lessen their effects if I have to go on an antibiotic. Oh, I really hope I don't.

WBC's do come up on dipstick. If there are none, not sure what will grow out on the culture. If you see a Urologist, ask them about D Mannose. I always take D mannose when I have symptoms, I reviewed with my urologist and he gave me the dose. I have also continued with it daily. I believe it really works.
I don't believe a probiotic will help with a UTI. Hang in there ,they should have the culture back in a few days

It came back clear this time! Feeling relieved right now.

Quick question...is it safe to take zinc lozenges or Cold Eeze or Emergen-C for colds?
My husband has been home for two days with one and while I'm staying away from him and spraying Lysol, I'm sure the whole house is full of germs.

Nanci T, I just saw a urologist last week because I was having the exact same symptoms I had one month ago. A culture was done last week and there was no infection (as of yet). However, I did have moderate amounts of microscopic hematuria. This was during my menstrual cycle so she is having me redo it this week. This seems to happen right around my period which is perplexing. She did recommend D Mannose and I started it yesterday and took 2. I bought the Now brand which is 500 mg. How many do you take daily?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Take a look at the bottle, I believe it's 2/day but always check with your urologist. I take a bit more but that has worked for me.
Happy you went to see a urologist, we see this over and over again with these symptoms and people who have been on Vanco. In the future I think we will see more information come out about Vanco and bladder symptoms. There are many posters who contact me about this
I think the D Mannose works great!! I buy it on Amazon and just found they have larger bottles with #250 capsules which I just purchased
Good luck

Anxious,
Glad you saw a uro.

I have a strange (aren't they all?) disease you might want to ask the uro about. It called IC - intercessant cystitis .It is usually diagnosed by a cystoscope. Not fun - ask for a tranquilizer first.

It has some od the same symptoms as a UTI including small amounts of blood. If you have it, you have to take showers - no baths, swimming, hot tubs.

You probably don't have it but worth checking in u still have problems.

Best of luck.

Just a cautionary note - I think mannose makes my stools looser, so don't be surprised if you notice this happening to you. I notice this effect after taking only 1 pill/day.
