I am a healthy 31yo female. Until now no ongoing health issues. And until now, the last time I was prescribed an antibiotic was well over 5 years ago.

This is my case study:

October 24, 2012
Weight 149lbs
36 weeks pregnant
Allergies to: amoxicillin and e-mycin
Seen for:
CHRONIC COUGH (5 weeks)
Prescribed:
Cephalexin (KEFLEX) 500 mg Oral Cap 3 times a day.

Deliver Baby

October 27, 2012
Release from hospital.
On drive home from hospital made husband make emergency bathroom stop for D. From this point on constantly going to the bathroom every 1-3 hours daily. Almost always having an instant urge while breast feeding.

November 02, 2012
Fed up and was seen by my Family Care Physician
Weight 131lbs
DIARRHEA
Labs ordered for:
CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE, PCR
STOOL CULTURE
OVA AND PARASITE IDENTIFICATION
Instructed to start taking Probiotics.

November 04, 2012
Notified: The stool test was positive for Clostridium Difficile
Prescribed:
METRONIDAZOLE (FLAGYL) 500 MG ORAL TAB
Instructions: Take 1 tablet orally 3 times daily for 10 days

**After meds were finished felt fine. Until:

November 25, 2012
Off antibiotic a little over a week. Notified Dr. I started to have the same symptoms again

Repeat Labs ordered for:
CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE, PCR
STOOL CULTURE
OVA AND PARASITE IDENTIFICATION

November 28, 2012
Notified: The stool test was positive for Clostridium Difficile
Prescribed:
METRONIDAZOLE (FLAGYL) 500 MG ORAL TAB
Instructions: Take 1 tablet orally 3 times daily for 14 days

was just wondering how long into my current round of antibiotic I should start noticing changes in my stool. I started the antibiotic a week ago Friday. I still am having loose stools.

Response:
Hopefully, this round of antibiotics of Metronidazole will stop the infection. C. Difficile can be difficult to treat. It can be recurrent several times. I have already spoke to Infectious Disease Department regarding your condition.

Stopped taking probiotics: thinking they weren't helping anything and they were expensive.

Notified Dr. I finished Flagyl and my stools were still loose and mucus-like.
Prescribed: VANCOMYCIN 50MG/ML ORAL SOLN(C)
Instructions: take one-half teaspoonful (2.5ml) orally every 6 hours for 14 days

**While on Vanco: I felt amazing. I could eat normally and was only going to the bathroom once a day. But my stools were always loose and never quite right.

**When finished vanco my stools were still loose and each day that passed while off of vanco noticed my condition would deteriorate. I would feel sicker and sicker with each passing day

CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE COLITIS INFECTION
DIARRHEA, CHRONIC

**On this day was first time I noticed blood in stool.

Prescription: VANCOMYCIN 50MG/ML ORAL SOLN(C)
Instructions: take one-half teaspoonful (2.5ml) orally 4 times daily for 1 week, take one-half teaspoonful (2.5ml) orally 3 times daily for 1 week take one-half teaspoonful (2.5ml) orally 2 times daily for 1 week take one-half teaspoonful (2.5ml) orally daily for 1 week -- keep refrigerated

Discussed future plans and options:
Consult with Infections Disease Specialist (appt set for Feb 8, 2013)
Email Dr. after two weeks of Vanco updating him on condition. Depending on condition may have a colonoscopy ordered.

Follow-up with Dr. Immediately upon completion of Vanco

Purchased and started taking Primal Defense Ultra because it was the only one I found with Saccharomyces boulardii.

Have had constant gurgling stomach and feeling I need to go to the bathroom but never can go. Constipated now? Maybe too many changes to my body at once with vanco and probiotic.
