Tenesmus and nausea, desperate and lonely

Postby Medena » Fri Mar 16, 2018 12:05 pm

Hi everyone,
I am wondering if anyone had problems with tenesmus and nausea in the recovery period?
I tested negative a few times after the treatment which was in December, but I am still not back to normal...
Occasionally, I have an episode of diarrhea, if I don't take probiotics for a few days my stool becomes yellowish, occasional mucos in formed stool, and a constant feeling of urgency which is driving me INSANE. When I eat, I feel nauseous and I feel as if food is stuck in my intestines. A weird feeling, I don't know how to describe it. I also have heart palpitations, with feeling I need to run to the toilet, but when I do nothing happens.
I also had occasional blood in stool, did a colonoscopy a month ago and there were no findings other than minor inflammation with no cdiff toxines found.
My GI is telling me he thinks it just takes time to recover my normal flora, and that all these symptoms are due to the damage of cdiff and antibiotics...
I am kind of mentally exhausted and feeling anxious so I google everything related to these symptoms, so far I am worried about relapse ofcourse, SIBO, Cdiff infection of small instestines, vagal nerve irritation...
The problem is I have a 4 month old (I got cdiff after childbirth due to antibiotics I took for stitches) so I dont have the possibility of going to the doctors often since I have to drag the baby with me and that's really stressful.
Thanks God for this forum, where we can hear other's opinions and experiences, at least to calm down a bit and know none of us is alone in this.
I even started thinking how I'd rather have cancer than this because honestly I feel like I'm struggling from day to day.
Please tell me from your experience what should I do, wait to see if the symptoms go away or do additional testings.. Should I trust the negative PCR tests and do they show the small intestines infection also? What to do with urgency feeling and is it related to cdiff infection I had? And why does my stool go yellow if I cut down the probiotics? Anyone has any experience with these symptoms during recovery?
I know this is not a medical site, but I'm sure some of you have already found answers to some of the common questions from your GI. Maybe you can give me some advice on the above. My GI said PCR is reliable, he doesnt really know why I have occasional blood or tenesmus or nausea, and that yellow stool is due to lack of good bacteria.
Thanks for your answers in advance!

Hi, Medena,

First of all - congratulations on that sweet baby! So exciting! I’m so sorry that you’ve found yourself here. It’s a club no one wants to be in, but you’re in good hands - this group is fantastic.

I had c diff a little more than 3 years ago (doing great now - tremendously thankful!), and your recovery sounds similar to mine! I remember being nauseous for quite a while - probably the first 3 months after my last dose of Dificid and I had tenesmus as well. It was so frustrating because I’ve always loved food and I didn’t have much appetite and was afraid to eat in case it made me go (and I was working two very busy jobs at the time, one of which had a 2-hour commute by bus that didn’t always have a bathroom on it). Sometimes I would get the urgent feeling and nothing would happen. Or the M mixed in, or random D episodes.

My doctor who is a c diff specialist in NYC calmed me down and told me it was part of the healing process. To just hang in there. So I did. I tried different probiotics but didn’t really notice a difference with one or the other. The main thing that helped was time.

The anxiety was terrible - but it didn’t last forever. Over time, my gut stabilized and I was able to add more and more foods until I was eating what I did before c diff. I was left with occasional IBS (I had pretty much guts of steel before and now they are a little more sensitive but only occassionally so I feel very fortunate. Typically it happens if I have too much garlic or salad or if it’s my cycle - gotta love hormones ha!).

If you’re testing negative and not experiencing any severe symptoms - that is great. Recovery can be an up and down experience. But you will feel better! Soon you will look back and this will be a small blip in your life and your days won’t be consumed with c diff. : )

Hang in there!
Nikki

It really will! Just keep on swimming as they say. If you look back at some of my old posts, you can see just how worried I was that I would never get back to my “old” self. I thought about c diff 24/7. It felt like it would always be that way. But I am here to say it’s not! You’ve got this - stay strong. : )

I also continued with nausea and still carry my "Sea Bands" in my purse, when IBS flares up, I wear them. They have been a great help. You can find them at most drug stores.
I also find I tend to go back to a bland diet for a few days and it helps.
You WILL get through this, it can take time and must be especially difficult with a newborn

Take Care

Hi Medena

Congratulations on ur beautiful baby. Boy or girl?!

I have a 7mo and had c diff when he was 4months. It’s a LOT to go thru as a Mum

I’ve also been incredibly anxious abt c diff. St the very least I offer you reassurance ur not alone in these thoughts

I’ve seen a naturopath who specialises in gut health. She has put me on the GAPS diet to slowly die off any bad bacteria and cultivate the good fellas.

I strongly urge you to consider this Perhaps a naturopath can tailor ur meal plan.

It’s helpful to know that with every meal I’m actively doing something to ward off c diff instead of passively stressing of its return.

If you need any tips etc let me know.

The GAPS is a probiotic rich diet but also eliminates foods that feed the bad bacteria.
It’ll help with the residual infanation and nausea

It’s something worth trying. I feel great on it.

Love to you. Stay strong

Hi Medena,
Your worries and complaints are common. I too had a rocky recovery and used to call the dr asking if I would ever feel normal again. I was nauseous on and off for months, my stools were erratic due to PI IBS and I felt awful. As Nancy T said, go back to a bland diet. That is what worked best for most of us. Add new foods slowly. Avoid fried and high fiber foods.
We all get anxious about any symptoms we are afraid might be a relapse but follow the 3 day rule- unless you have 3 or more episodes of d in a 3 day period, you probably are fine.

Best of luck,
Rita
