Activated Charcoal

Postby Bobbie » Thu Jun 28, 2007 11:40 am

Moved this thread from Gen. Discussion. Remember, all "cures" in Treatments are not usually approved treatments for C. diff. & not endorsed or recommended by this site. Some might be worth a try, but check with your own doc. first.

Just talked with a FNP discussing C-diff and he stated years ago, one of the metro area hospitals treated his son for C-diff with activated charcol and has beeen C-diff free for years. He also stated that he is currently treating a patient who tested positive for C-diff and is having favorable results. Does anybody have any knowledge on this treatment ?

Charcoal is an "old time" remedy for stomach upsets but have never heard of it for treating C. diff.

Bobbie:
I did a follow up call with him. The treatment was prescribed years ago by the specialists at the top childrens hospital in the state. His son has been C-diff free for 16 years. The one drawback I can see with the charcol would be it's absorbtion factor is relation to other med's taken.

Check with a qualified naturopath or your pharmacist re. aborption. A few pharmacists are now studying "natural" remedies.

Saw this post and thought I may be able to add some insight. Activated charcoal will not "cure" your c-diff, but it may possibly make you feel more comfortable. It absorbs all the toxins, but they are continuing to be produced. So it may be useful at eliminating discomfort. It should be taken apart from food and other supplements since it will absorb the nutrients and benefits from these too.

It is a commonly used in the ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder), since these kids guts are really messed-up. In Italy many ASD children take activated charcoal everyday. It can be purchased at any health food store and everyone should keep this product in their medicine cabinets for poisonings and overdoses.

I find the history behind it interesting --
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/activate ... cle_em.htm

It was 1831. In front of his distinguished colleagues at the French Academy of Medicine, Professor Touery drank a lethal dose of strychnine and lived to tell the tale. He had combined the deadly poison with activated charcoal.

That's how powerful activated charcoal is as an emergency decontaminant in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (which includes the stomach and intestines). Activated charcoal is considered to be the most effective single agent available. It is used after a person swallows or absorbs almost any toxic drug or chemical.
