Asacol
I saw a GI Specialist yesterday regarding my reoccuring C-diff and recovery. My stools are narrow in the afternoon but no diarrhea, and I have been off Vanco since 12/8. My GI said I may still have some irritation, and she prescribed me some Asacol. I started taking it yesterday. Has anyone ever been prescribed Asacol for this before?
Asacol (mesasalamine) is one of the 5-ASA medications typically used to treat ulcerative colitis. It is similar to Azulfidine (sulfasalazine), which my son was on, except without the sulfa content. These are analgesics that work topically inside the colon to reduce inflammation. Side effects usually are minimal and not serious.
I am allergic to Sulfa Drugs and most NAISDS. At my GI Spec.'s office, all my blood tests came back normal, and that included the tests for inflamation. It is good news. I will continue to take it. Good thing I have insurance, as it normally would have been an expensive drug. However, not as bad as Vanco. I am also keeping up on my accidopholus as my GI Spec. recommended.
