If I slowed down when writing notes, I'ld do a lot better :). Dificid is awesome!

Brand new poster. On day 8 of dificid for 1st recurrence. Happy to read about good outcomes. I am better, but stools still have odor of c diff. Do u think that means it is not going to be gone after day 10?

Hi, Yogini,

Try not to worry about the smell. I feel like I had that for a while during treatment and even after treatment I would smell it now and then (Dificid worked for me - I had a taper treatment with Enteragam and am now, thankfully, almost 2.5 years free). Hang in there!

Hello Yogini and Welcome to the site Please read the first thread for all new posters

Also if you have a question, it will be seen by everyone if you post as a new question.

As far as smell, some have it and other's do not. Just as Nikki has mentioned, it had nothing to do with relapse. Hopefully once you have completed the 10 days you will recover and be on your way!

Sorry if I posted incorrectly- I thought I read the instructions. I am a 62 year old female. C diff after course of clindamycin for cellulitis. 1st treatment flagyl, recurred after 1 week. Now on day 8 of dificid. Wondering about how to take the probiotics- was searching for a clear post on that? I am a retired nurse practitioner and a Kaiser patient. Will see an ID doctor 5 days after I finish dificid- hope I don't recur during that window!

For probiotics, space them in between doses of Dificid. I believe Dificid is twice a day, so take the probiotics midday. The exception would be Florastor, which is a yeast and will not be killed by the antibiotic.

Yogini
Welcome to the site. Glad you decided to go on a course of Dificid hope it will do the trick . Dificid is a narrow spectrum antibiotic ,it's made to target only clostridia species so if your probiotics don't contain live cultures of clostridia (for example like Clostridium butyricum) they should be safe. Also there is the Florastor probiotic that Beth indicated , witch is a friendly yeast studied to be useful against Cdiff and that won't be killed by any antibiotic.

I would still take them in between doses. Although Dificid targets clostridia, my doctor said that he has seen it help SIBO to a degree, which means it may kill some other types of bacteria, just not any major pathogens.

Dificid is very narrow spectrum but it does still kill some species other than c.diff, it was "fast tracked" so thorough testing was not done, also there's a few hundred species of gut flora that are unidentified so as the others suggest space probiitics half way between dificid doses.
Remember that a test should not be done to see if its gone, your ID Dr should go by the symptoms. Unfortunately a new Dr might automaticaly ask for a test and 5 days after treatment it could still be positive but not need treating.

Hello Yogini

I am glad you have had several responses, just sorry you are going through this! I would time the probiotic out while taking the Dificid. Do remember although you are seeing the MD after you have completed the medication, it can take some time to feel better.

Many of us get Post IBS. I am happy to hear you are a Kaiser patient and they did not put you on months of Vanco, went straight to Dificid after the Flagyl.

Wishing you the best with this

I relapsed once after the horrible, nasty Flagyl and twice after Vancomycin. I can't say that I am rid of C-diff, but I am now into my 17th day after 10 days of Dificid and doing quite well. Each day my potties are getting better and better and I can eat whatever I like. In fact, my potties are better now than they were BEFORE I got that cursed infection!

My only problem now is that I got a FLUAD 2017 flu shot, 3 days ago, and am experiencing some mild but annoying side effects.

During my 10 days of Dificid, I also took:

5 Jarrow Formulas Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS, 5 Billion; === 2 Dr. Tobias Deep Immune; === 1 Dr. Tobias 30 Billion CFUs, 10 Strains Probiotics for Women and Men; === 1 NOW 25 Billion Probiotic-10; === 5000 iu vit d3.

Right or wrong, I feel that I'll never be totally free of Clostridium difficile bacteria, so I will continue to take my probiotics, albeit reduced amounts, in order to boost my defensive bacteria.

Regards, and best of luck and health, Bob

Just to clarify- nothing against Kaiser- I have been patient 30+ years. Because of my medical background- I researched treatment options after flagyl failed. Did not want to use vanco, since the literature gives it the same recurrence rates as Flagyl. I am very lucky my primary MD listens to me and was able to order Dificid even though it is restricted at Kaiser to specialists only. Soonest appointment I could get with "urgent" referral to infectious disease was 2 weeks after my recurrence. So it pays to do your homework and support it with evidence. This site has great resources and I am ready with the tapering regimen for dificid I found here should the 10 day course fail.
You guys rock!

I was very happy you were able to get Dificid through Kaiser, in 2014 when I was diagnosed it was not offered or extremely difficult to get after several Vanco failures. I am not a Kaiser patient, but we did have some on here at the time.
Flagyl and Vanco are generally used first due to cost which has been a battle for many including myself. I was on Vanco for months(Pulse/Taper) In my case, I relapsed and onto Dificid. I did relapse after 10 days of Dificid and went on a long taper after finding my own research paper on it.Looking back I was very sick at the time. Had to really push my GI, it's a battle for many. We talk about being your advocate on here, but we are fighting a medical community that is not clear on this illness with an appropriate Protocol.
It's fortunate your physician went along with this treatment, Dificid has been a great success and hopefully once you have finished you can move on from this illness.
