This is an old study, but talks about Vanco and S.Boulardii yeast...

http://www.enterol.pl/bad6.htm

[Guest Posted by: 'DaveF']

DaveF,

Thank you again for your information. I hope you are doing better. I think about you as it was your information that helped my doctor prescribe for me. Even though it is not working out for me as I had hoped, it is important that you know how much I appreciate that you were willing to share this with this site. You gave me hope, and that is something in itself.

[Guest Posted by: 'Carolyn']

I'm glad. Hope you get better soon. I saw Dr Lamont today (who I posted in the doctors area here). He has written articles and done research on CDiff.

Without quoting him directly, I will say he made me feel this thing is not a killer. It's can be tough, it can linger for a while, but he implied, like everyone on this board says, it eventually goes away.

Something will work eventually. Our bodies don't like CDiff and want to spit it out. That is the good thing. The odds are greatly against the CDiff organism and in our favor.

Hang in there!

[Guest Posted by: 'DaveF']

In my case, I just recently finished another month of Vanco. That made almost 5 months of Vanco. I also have been taking Florastor and Culturelle.

2 weeks ago I stopped the Vanco, and it has not back yet (first time this has happened). I saw Dr. Lamont today, and in my case, which was mild but almost non-stop cdiff, he said that the best thing is to let the flora return to normal on it's own.

He said that unless I had more severe symptoms like fever, extreme diarrhea, etc that they wouldn't even do tests for it. So my case is not as bad as many of you folks out there, but scary and bothersome nonetheless. It just WOULD NOT go away no matter what I did.

So I am going to continue Questran (to absorb the toxin and solidify things) and Florastor for a few more weeks, then stop. He seemed to value Florastor (s.boulardii) more than the Culturelle because more is known about s.boulardii. He also talked about Kefir, which I made a new post about.

He talked about immunotherapy for older patients who may have an impared immune system, but considering my age that wasn't a concern for me.

He made it sound like c-diff only is only deadly in people who have other serious medical problems already.

He made it sound VERY beatable. I think the main problem many people have on this site is (1) not having doctors who understand it and (2) not getting the right treatment with probiotics (since most doctors push antibiotics).

The last thing I remember him saying was that many people get IBS after C-Diff, and it can be difficult to tell them apart, so not to panic and take Vanco again right away, even if the color is funny or there is diarrhea.

I highly recommend this physician. It seems like he's been studying c-diff and has been involved in medication trials, etc. He talked about Synsorb, but it didn't sound much different than Questran.

I remember him also saying that the ultimate solution may be a vaccine for c-diff. I suppose if it's like a measles vaccine, it would build up antibodies to the organism itself, and that would help prevent reoccurances... but that's a guess on my part. And who knows when that will happen.

But all in all, I felt wonderful that somebody who really understands this disease told me it is beatable and there are options.

I listed his info on the doctors section, he is in Boston. Click this link to do an automatic Google search for articles where he's referenced...
http://www.google.com/search?q=lamont%2Bdifficile%2Brecurrent

By the way, I wasn't real clear there... I've had no symptoms for almost 3 weeks now. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's not just the Questran keeping it away...

DaveF,
I hope this time you have a complete recovery. I really appreciate all the info you have provided this site. Good luck.

Bob,
I wonder if you're the same Bob that asked this question before? Anyway, there is lots of info on S.Boulardii in the general discussion section and I think also in the questions section. Under gen. discussion page down and you'll see "How much Culturelle/S.Boulardii?" also, admin posted info on Florastor. From what I understand Florastor contains the most live yeast compared to other brands. Also, I have both and noticed that the Jarrow brand has no odor at all which I think is odd considering the Florastor has a very pungent smell and though this may not indicate one is better than the other I'm fairly certain it is an indication that the Florastor likely has more live yeast compared to Jarrow. Dr. McFarland is one of the researchers that has conducted studies on c.diff patients and effect of Florastor(S.Boulardii) and told me to take 1 gram(1000 mg) per day...500 mg in am and 500 mg in the eve. This gets fairly costly since 1 box costs $20.00 and contains 40... 50 mg capsules. The Jarrow brand is less expensive. I got bit gassy when I took 1000 mg a day so I cut back to about 200 mg per day. Dr. McFarland suggests taking it while you're on Vanco or Flagyl and for 1 month following. Again, the c.diff patients in the study were on 1000 mg per day. I definately noticed an improvement and am still taking it. I've been ill for over 1.5 years with low grade fever and loose stools. I tested positive for C.diff by culture but neg for toxin using PCR test. It's likely that I am suffering from some other type of GI disorder. I did speak to a doctor over the phone a couple months ago and he suggested that I might be one of the rare ones that become ill from non-toxigenic C.diff. I'm seeing a specialist next month so hopefully I will soon be diagnosed. Hope you recover soon. Francesca

[Guest Posted by: 'Francesca']

Bob,

Based on one of the reports we once calculated that I should take 12 pills per day of the jarrow brand saccharomyces boulardii. A report from the competitor claimed that the jarrow brand has 1/2 of the potency they claim to have. So for a month or two I actually took 24 pills a day! Unfortunately I didn't notice any improvement. I went back to 12/day and 6/day...no difference.

I even resorted to getting the French one sent to me from France (it's called Ultra Levure). At least it's only 35 Francs for a bottle of 50 pills. That doesn't seem to help either.

[Guest Posted by: 'MX']

Does anyone else feel that the culturelle and florastor are just too expensive?? I can't afford to even purchase either, so I have never tried them. I hope I am not doomed because of this, but it is either pay the bills and necessities, such as groceries for my family, plus the bills for vanco. and GI visits or get the culturelle and florastor--and I have to pick the first! It makes me depressed to realize that these supplements that could help aren't an option for me!!

Wendy,

I know that the floraster and culturelle are helping a lot of people, but they don't seem to be doing anything for me. I am still on the Vanco, too, which isn't curing me either. And yes, it is a problem to pay for them. There is no way to know if they would help you unless you tried them, but I do understand having to make choices. So, no you are not alone in thinking they are too expensive.

I am using what I have bought, just because they were so expensive. I feel I don't have anything to lose by taking them. Fortunately my insurance picked up the Vanco. To pay for the others, we just had to dip into our savings, which a lot of people just don't have. Now both of our cars are having problems, and I feel kind of bad we used some of that money on me and it isn't even helping.

Anyway, try not to get discouraged. Maybe you could try the yogurts if you aren't already.

[Guest Posted by: 'Carolyn']

Wendy,
I don't think you are losing much. I know studies shows that these probiotics help, but I haven't noticed any difference. I was so desperate that I spent hundreds of dollars on culturelle and S.Boulardii as well as anything else I could get my hands on in the local stores.

[Guest Posted by: 'MX']

Wendy,

I took florastor for almost a month and it didn't do anything for me. The success rate I think is 50% or less, can't remember. But to do it right, you are to take 1 gram a day, which is 20 pills a day, which is 1/2 a box (~$10/day). I am still taking Culturelle, I think its helping. If you order culturelle from their website, its cheaper the more you get. But you are right, everything adds up!

[Guest Posted by: 'Robin']
