Fish Oil, Turmeric & Recovery

Postby Acres » Sat May 14, 2016 8:45 am

Hi,
The last several days there has been minor set backs in my recovery (cramps, rumbles, fatigue, abdomen aching) I attribute this to adding foods back into my diet...
I am ok, dealing with it. not letting it sink my attitude, making adjustments (my recovery is a work in progress).

Talking to a friend of mine she said she knows someone who had c.diff and during their recovery they started taking Fish Oil (help heals the gut) and Turmeric (her friend claims it kills spores) supplements...I am already taking several supplements and do not want to over do it....
Does anyone have experience with these 2 supplements ? Did they help ?
Thank you.
Scott

Turmeric is an amazing supplement. In appropriate doses, it can
Absolutely help your body heal, especially in terms of this bacteria. I would keep taking it.

One thing I've learned about c diff in the short (though these last three months seem like a lifetime) time that I've dealt with it is that there are no clear answers and no clear path to health. Three months ago, I was an active, healthy, "somewhat" young :) person who took for granted a healthy body. During this process I've done everything right--eaten clean, taken florastor, eliminated sugar, alcohol, food, etc., and i'm still fighting it (even after flagyl and dificid).

I've learned that everyone's response to it is different; what works for one may not work for another. It's scary and time consuming. But, we will heal in time...maybe not in our time :) but that's okay. The key is to try to stay positive and keep charging forward.

I don't know much about the curative powers of turmeric and fish oil.

You both have great attitudes and are correct. C diff heals in its own time.

As Feedback said, stay positive and charge forward.

Hi,
My wife recently purchased both, but I am not sure if I will start taking them since my recovery is on a positive steady path....I believe my recent set back was due to getting so excited about adding food back into my diet, I went overboard...

Yes, a positive attitude/staying active sure helps. They conquered my depression...

After the 1st time I walked the dog, did some stretching and exercise, I could not stop smiling, I had this overwhelming feeling of comfort. My body & soul were sure screaming at me "this is the way forward"...

I take florastor and vsl3. For me, the vsl3 has an obvious positive effect on my gut...Also Papaya enzyme and dgl licorice help as well....

I see a GI specialist for SIBO and curcumin, which is derived from Tumeric, is one of the things that he recommended. I tried fish oil, but it did not agree with me. I know a few other people said it make their intestines feel better. If you try either, try one at a time or you won't know which one is helping or hurting.

I am not a huge fan of supplements because they aren't regulated so you really don't know what's in them. When reporters send them to labs they often get dicey results. Fish oil seems like it would lube the GI tract so it's never been on my list of things to try haha. Claritin is cheap, over the counter, and works great to calm down overly excited immune cells. It or Allegra work great for post infectious IBS and bladder irritation not caused by infection. You could get whole turmeric root at a whole foods or a health food store to put in a smoothie. It's a popular item but I find the taste kinda odd. Xanax is great for anxiety, muscle spasms, and is an antihistamine/mast cell stabilizer, which makes it effective for bladder discomfort and spasms. A benedryl and Xanax at bedtime help me sleep and I wake up with no belly or bladder pain, and no itchy skin stuff either. I honestly don't own stock in Claritin or Allegra, but taking them twice a day has restored my health after years of bizarre symptoms that affected many different systems throughout my body. Benedryl is a stronger antihistamine that I only use at night if stuff is flaring up (particularly skin and bladder) and it's remarkably effective for me.

I'm not sure what the difference is between curcumin and turmeric. On the curcumin I bought it said it was derived from turmeric. Maybe it is more concentrated. In any case, the GI specialist recommends it for patients with IBS and SIBO, more the SIBO. I only took it for a few days. It seemed to give me an acid stomach, and I did not notice that it did anything much one way or the other, but I really did not give it a chance. Many people take turmeric for general inflammation - joints and muscles and for arthritis and they seem to get relief. I don't think it is anything that can hurt you, but buy a well-known brand, not one of the off-shoots. I bought a liquid vitamin D3 that was sublingual from a company I had never heard of and the sprayer was defective and I got way more D3 than I thought I was getting and my levels went too high. For years, I had been using Dr. Mercola brand and did fine. Then they added Xylitol to the formula and I did not want that, so I got this other one. I have not taken it in over a month and my levels only came down some, although better than before. So, do buy a brand that is well-known. I think I got Nature's Bounty or one of those that a regular drug store carries.

I started using Turmeric about 4 years ago and actually stopped using it during my pregnancy last year. When i got diagnosed with the cdiff i immediately started using it again. Turmeric helps with inflammation and pain. I buy the spice at Whole Foods and add it to all my foods. I also eat a spoonful of coconut oil every day. I think these two supplements helped me with my revovery. :)

One of the sales people at the Vitamin Shoppe told me I have to take Turmeric with fish oil in order to get the benefits from it....
Is there any truth to this ?

I have never taken fish oil supplements but i do eat fish at least twice a week. I love to sprinkle turmeric on my tuna, it has an earthy taste...my one year old loves it! :)

In today's issue of The People's Pharmacy newsletter, there's an article about an adverse effect of turmeric:

http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2016/05/ ... 73b3d1ddb4

The article mentions a number of possible side-effects, including bad interactions with various drugs that people may be taking for another condition. I'm not saying that people should or shouldn't take turmeric, only that it's important to keep in mind that these "natural" remedies, supplements, etc., also may have side-effects. One of my relatives recently had to go to an ER, where she was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, after she took a "natural" herbal remedy.

"The best fish oil"? This is a question with no real answer.
