Par 101 - New C. Diff Specific Antibiotic

Postby Lauren » Mon Jan 02, 2006 8:55 pm

Millie, one of our frequent contributors, found this in her travels. It is apparently a new antibiotic developed by Par Pharmaceuticals which has been designed specifically to treat c.diff without disturbing other gut flora. Sounds like a good idea - we hope it gets approved!

A prominent C. diff. authority says Par l0l is promising although testing still isn't completed.

Pam contributed this:

I called Optimer yesterday about their ongoing trials (started in April -06) & while the person I talked to was extremely nice, I was told I didn't qualify for the trials because I am a relapser. They need a "homogeneous" patient group so don't want any who have relapsed. So probably really just those recently diagnosed.

The third phase of their trials will begin sometime this year if the first one ends successfully. They'll know about that in March. Optimer DID tell me that sometimes they will include a relapser for eligibility for "compassionate" reasons & took my email address in case that happens.
