FMT - Treatment Options compared

Postby AndyShax » Wed Feb 06, 2013 6:33 pm

Found an interesting study delving into the details of FMT administration - what methods are more effective?
http://cid.oxfordjournals.org/content/5 ... nsion.html

Some interesting stats that stand out:

Number of infusions:
- Just 1 - 87% cure rate
- 2 or 3 - 95%
- more than 3 - 87% (this was the sickest group, 12% died, but mostly from other problems)

Delivery method:
- Colonoscope - 88% cured, none died
- Enema - 95% cured, 1% died
- Gastroscope - 76% cured, 4% died from condition, 10% died from all causes (ouch!)

Donor:
- a Relative - 93.3% cured
- not a relative - 84% cured
- Mixed donors - 79% cured with 12% death (mixing donors is best avoided?)

Liquid used:
- Saline - 86% cured
- water - 98% (its only one study that used it though)

Infusion volume used:
< 200ml -- 80%
< 500ml -- 86%
> 500ml -- 97% (so more is better?)

I did 8 infusions; 4 days of infusions, 1 day off, then another 4 days of infusions. Never had a problem since then!!!! I couldn't leave my house for other 4 months when I had active C-Diff. If I ate a small portion of food as soon as I swallow I would have "D". I lived on Ensure!!!1 It's been 4 years since the infusions, but I still have a fear of taking antibiotics. I don't think that will ever go away!!!! Thanks for posting!!!
