LOST. started iv zithromax f/ lyme woke up with D, nausea

Postby robfar » Tue Jul 21, 2009 12:37 pm

started iv zithromax for lyme yesterday. had alot of foul smelling gas and nausea all night and now have foul smelling D. also had night sweats and flu feeling all night. see below for my previous post. really feel lost as my dr is a lyme doctor and says the lyme could be causing my loss of appetite(on and off for 2 months now) MY STORY IS BELOW:

please, any help is appreciated.

was diagnosed with lyme 2 months ago and put on amoxy for 1 month.
was then put on doxy for 5 days but got a rash and i discontinued it. around the time of the rash i began to LOSE MY APPEITIE and this contiued for 10 days with also nausea and chills at night. just feeling sick. the worst was the loss of appetite where food actually looked horrible. my doctor gave me diflucan and i seemed to get better for 2 days when it started again. also i had one day of diarrhea and that was when i felt better.
symptoms began again, still no D just the nausea, night chills, anxiety, and out of it feeling. this lasted 10 days with 2 trips to the ER. blood work normal, iv water and sent home a virus.

finally the symptoms got better and my lyme doc out me on cedax which is a cephosporin, . 10 days into the cedax i started losing my appetite and all the symtoms with it returned with even more anxiety(never been anxious or depressed). this time i had D for about 5 days, mustard yellow and bad smelling. he stopped the cedax and told me to take s. bour. this did seem to help the D but not the nausea and loss of appetite. also started developing cold night sweats and the anxiety is through the roof.

went to a GP he said c diff and put me on flagyl. stool test done before flagyl but not with D came back negative. on my 5th day of flagyl and no change except for the D seems better. had a little last night and no bm today.

my lyme doctor thinks that the gastro and anxiety is being caused by lyme and wants me on zithromycin IV on monday. should i listen to him and do the IV.i feel like i do have lyme psych symptoms and may do it. could the anxiety be causing the D. also just had a brain MRI which came back normal except of spots consitent with neuro lyme pt.s

i tested positive for lyme. does it sound like C DIFF?

Ok yesterday when I said I thought you needed a second opinion, I still think you do. This doctor, in my opinion, is over treating you for lyme disease, the general consensus among doctors is that no more than 2 - 4 weeks of antibiotics is needed unless you have advanced stage 3 lyme (lyme for over a year without treatment) and then you need to be on an IV. Here, read this brief review from the CDC. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/LYME/ld_humandisease_treatment.htm I was on and off antiobiotics a whole year during my lyme, but that was for all kinds of side effects it had caused, things I later learned often resolve on their own and now I wish I had just calmed down and waited instead of always clamoring for more antibiotics.

No offense to you at all, but LLMD, or lyme literate doctors, operate outside of the accepted protocal's for treating lyme. As a lyme sufferer, I'm aware that it does things that mainstream doctors do not understand, but having read about and seen an LLMD, I think they go overboard with antibiotics and diagnose every person they see with every tick borne disease under the sun. Lyme test results can show positive after you've been treated for years even if you are no longer infected. Lyme symptoms can linger for months even if you are no longer having active lyme! LLMDs don't believe this, they think if you have some joint pain after months of treatment, you still have lyme. Well, I had pain and positive tests for 6 months after my lyme, and the pain went away on its own and the lyme results started coming back negative and I eventually felt nearly 100% again.

If you are indeed getting C-Diff, then you need to be on Flagyl or Vanco and no longer be on Anti-biotics while being treated with Flagyl. Antibiotics will only kill your good bacteria and allow C-Diff to flourish. I have no idea why your doctor thought 35 days of antibiotics wasn't enough, that is slightly over the maximum amount for new cases. Do you have a good general practitioner you can double check with? If not, I recommend finding an infectious disease specialist because you may have a double whammy of lyme +C-diff, but as I mentioned, there is a chance your lyme was successfully treated and your doctor is overdoing it. You are near NYC I'm sure there are some good ID doctors or mainstream Lyme specialists there (not LLMDs), I would try and make an appointment with an ID first though as they may be adept at handling both of these things.

(FYI I'm being treated for a lyme relapse right now - 10 days of Amox)

I hope you can find some help soon, if you do indeed have C-Diff that needs to be properly treated, but you need to find out for certain and the LLMD may not be able to handle it.
