C-Diff and no thyroid

Postby sjpybas » Tue Mar 13, 2007 8:20 pm

I had C-Diff 5 weeks ago and was hospitalized for 8 days. I am a 45 female in good health except that I had my thyroid removed three years ago. I am still so weak and my TSH and T3/4 levels are very, very high. I experience nauseau and diahreah off and on. My doctor is telling me it just takes time.

Is this normal? Thank God for this website. I really feel all alone.....

Is your doctor a thyroid specialist? If not, perhaps you should see one. I am no expert on thyroid, but all the other females in my family have thyroid problems and take thyroid medication....and I know it was a tricky thing to get the right level of medication.

sjpybas,
Welcome to the group that no one wants to join. You are not alone. There is lots of knowledge and wisdom here, not to mention great people. Check out Dr. Borody's article as well as the FAQ section.

Are you still on Flagyl or vancomycin? If not, how long have you been off? It is possible to have a relapse for some time after finishing these. You can feel pretty certain that you are done after about 10 - 12 weeks, even though most relapses happen much sooner than this. Most people (about 80%) are cured after 1-2 rounds of Flagyl or vanco. I certainly hope that you are one of the lucky majority. Good luck.

Someone that I work with just had hers removed and she had a heck of a time getting her medication levels right and was very ill until they got it right. I believe she still has to go every Monday and have blood test done to see if they have to up her meds or lower her meds.

If you feel like you still have CDiff DEMAND a test. You know your body. However it does take time to recover post cdiff, you may have IBS about 1 of 5 people develop IBS after cdiff. You know how you feel so go with your gut, get a test done for your own peace of mind. Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

I also have had c diff and have had my thyroid removed 4 years ago. I have heard others say that a lot of times when you're ill your thyroid levels go a little crazy in repsonse to the illness. However, it is best to find a good thyroid doc to help you get your levels in good range. If you have too much T3 & T4 you may be taking too much medication. It takes about 6 weeks for your body to adjust to any changes in thyroid medication so that's why you're usually tested after that once a change is made. If you don't know already there is a good website on about.com with Mary Shomon. There is a forum there with lots of others dealing with thyroid issues.

I just finished my treatment for c diff Monday so I'm praying that it stays gone for good. I guess this is more of a wait and see disease.

Best of Luck to you,
Amy
