First antibiotic - six years since c diff

Postby NikaNik » Wed May 26, 2021 8:26 pm

Hi, everyone! I posted this in discussions but it fit better here.

I first came here in 2015 after getting c diff from taking Augmentin. I relapsed twice so I saw a c diff specialist in NYC who put me on a Dificid taper with Enteragam and that did the trick. The support here was wonderful!

I ended up with post-infectious IBS as well as PTSD (saw a therapist and had EMDR treatment which helped).

Thankfully, I’ve avoided antibiotics since then. Until yesterday...

I am a photographer so I’m always checking for bugs, ticks, bites etc. Even still, ended up with two tick bites. The tick wasn't engorged or attached. Came right off. But one of the bites turned into cellulitis (large red circle with a streak coming out of it). No fever or any other symptoms. I have NEVER had that before. The doc knows about my c diff history and put me on Bactrim. Praying I make it through with no relapse.

I’m on a probiotic and trying to stay positive. Has anyone made it through with Bactrim? Or only had cellulitis one time? I’ve heard once you get it, you are prone. My anxiety is having a field day.

Nikki

Yes, there are other posters who report having taken Bactrim and did not relapse. My mom took stronger antibiotics after c diff and she did not relapse either.

I had a similar situation that was the result of a pretty bad cut that turned into an abscess. My doc gave me bactrim and said when the antibiotic took hold to discontinue it. I took around 3 of 10 days if I recall. I had a couple less than stellar mornings but all was well. Bactrim works very quick and doesn’t have to be finished according to my pcp. I was scared as hell but it all worked out.

Don't think that Bactrim will make u relapse , but you can never feel safe enough after you had a bout, or two of Cdiff (in the past). You may get a day or two of stomach discomfort because of it ,which is totally normal as it's listed in the side effects, try not freak out .

I wouldn’t worry about a repeat of cellulitis. It doesn’t happen all that often. It takes a precipitating event of something pretty serious.

Thank you, Georgina and Ril! So far so good and I’m hanging in. It’s just so confusing. I’ve been bitten by mosquitos, fleas, chiggers... never had cellulitis from those bites or anything else. I read online it’s caused by staph but I’ve never had issues with staph (I’m 41). Luckily have always had great skin. Not sure why my body reacted with the lymphatic streaking/cellulitis but what a bummer. It was a mild case (which I’m thankful for). But I’m just annoyed as I check myself all the time and don’t know how I missed it. Thank you for all the encouraging words!

Nikki,
Bactrim is usually not a big offender. Keep busy and, hopefully, you will get through this unscathed. You beat this once already.

I enjoy your photo stories on FB. What a fun job!!

Thank you so much, Bobbie! I’m definitely keeping busy and I love my job (lots of work - but it is fun!).

I actually had to stop the Bactrim with one pill left because I broke out in hives all over! Called the nurse and she said I must have a sulfa allergy. Never knew I had it! I hadn’t taken antibiotics in six years and don’t recall ever taking Bactrim before. But the hives are almost completely cleared up now.

So glad to hear you enjoy our images. That made me smile! I hope you, and everyone here, is having a lovely weekend.

Nikki,
It was probably the sulfa in Bactrim. I am allergic to sulfa, too. glad u were able tolerate most of it.
