Possible urethritis — is flagyl safe?

Postby lilkitty » Thu Feb 04, 2021 12:51 am

Hi there, so I’m now having some urinary symptoms and my urethra is irritated and inflamed. Was prescribed flagyl for this but am worried about taking it. I know it’s used to treat CDiff but it can also cause it.....I am not entirely sure what to do. It’s not severe and most of my results came back normal re: urine etc but the discomfort is very real. I stopped taking vanco a few days ago for my first recurrence.

I would ask if there is an ointment or cream that you might try. For older women estrogen cream is often prescribed. There is also a gel called Metrogel that is flagyl. GYNs prescribe it for vaginal use.

What you describe is one of the typical side effects of vanco, I am surprised your Dr wants to treat it so soon.
Most likely it will resolve now your no longer taking the vanco.
Personally I would NOT be taking flagyl when tests did not show an infection.
In your stage of recovery flagyl is quite high risk of causing a relapse and undoing all the good that vanco did.

I had that side effect during and right after taking Vanco, and it subsided on its own. I would be hesitant to treat.

Flagyl caused my initial infection, though I was prescribed an ungodly amount.

Thanks all. I ended up not taking the prescription and symptoms have seemed to mostly reside. There does seem to be some pelvic floor involvement ie the muscles are too tight and tense. That I suppose could have been caused or worsened by the c diff itself with the bowel inflammation and spasming.
