Quick Florastor Question - for regular use?

Postby NS789 » Wed May 20, 2020 11:37 am

Does anyone know if Florastor is intended/safe for continued use? I've been using it for several weeks now and where it's a yeast-based probiotic, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be used long term and if there might be any risks associated with that. It seems to work well so I want to keep taking it, but the Florastor website just says to take it in conjunction with your antibiotics. So should you keep taking it after your antibiotics are done?

Thanks!
32 y/o female. Got C. diff in Feb. 2020. Prescribed Flagyl (10 days), then Flagyl again (4 days), then Vanco (10 days), then Dificid (10 days), then Dificid again (10 days), then a Vanco taper (5 wks), then a Dificid taper (2 mths) and finally recovered.

Thanks Roy! This site seems to say it's safe for 15 months so that's good to know :).

Aside from the safety question, I don't think there are evidence-based studies, so far, that support Florastor's usefulness on a regular basis, whereas there are data that suggest it may be preventive against C. diff in hospitalized patients. When I had a hip replacement several years ago, which included several doses of a wide-spectrum antibiotic (the riskiest type), an infectious disease doctor recommended taking Florastor for several weeks, before, during, and after hospitalization. Some months later, when I was still taking it, my GI doctor thought it was serving no further purpose.
If your illness was preceded by use of a medication, e.g., an antibiotic, please fill out an FDA Adverse Event Report at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm

That's interesting! I also always thought yogurt was helpful but I've now had two specialists tell me that yogurt is highly overrated and it's just good marketing lol

I've used Florastor for many months at a time. With both of my c-diff bouts, my GI/ID doctors have not been in a hurry for me to get off it, recommending taking it for at least 3 months after finishing medication.
2011: contracted c-diff after taking Amoxicillin and Cipro. Successfully treated with Flagyl taper. (Posts under old username, Elvish)

2020: contracted c-diff after taking Augmentin. Finished Dificid taper/pulse on 3/15.

I take florastor for a few months and then switch to Phillips colon health. Seems to work very well and I’ve actually never felt better. Knock on wood, I never get sick. Well, as long as you don’t count the turd rocket that hit me back in 2019.

No it doesn’t. My GI recommended it way back and also said to switch it up from time to time.
