Can C Diff attack the liver?

Postby Rachel98 » Tue Feb 26, 2019 6:06 pm

Hi! I am new here. I am 20 years old and have been feeling unwell for the past 3 weeks. I was recently put on Flaygal. (According to their criteria I was labeled a mild case.) I am so nervous I am not gonna beat this monster. :( My case was weird. I didn't present with dirreaha until just this past week. I was constipated. I was finally able to give a decent sample. Was diagnosed on Friday. (Too late imo.) My initial symptoms were: Abdomial pain, Fatigue, Nausea, loss of appetite, dehydration, etc. I was hospitalized for the dehydration. I had an endoscopy done that found a hiatal hernia. I was bleeding from my rectrum early on and at the hospital I found out it was a fissure. (They did a partial colonoscopy on me. I forgot what the exact term was.) I had abdominal ultrasounds done. CT Scans that came back normal, the whole shabang. But they wouldn't do a stool sample on me because I didn't present with classic C diff. :/ Well I started getting the dirreaha after the miralax and wham. C Diff. I was right all along. Well now I am concerned it attacked my liver and I am currently trying to fight it off. My WBC and my scans came back normal. How? :( My blood work shows my liver enzymes are now elevated. Just recently. My ALT level was 64 but dropped to 56, my Bilirubin was 0.6 but jumped up to 1.0... So it is alarming. I have been itching all over, and am kinda tired. I'm having upper abdominal pain but I can't seem to figure out what to do. I feel like C DIFF has won. Argh! Will I be able to get a new liver? (I forgot to add that I was on Mucrion (can't spell) before this happened. Then before that I was on cexlpha- something. Then before that I was on Doxycycline.) I really wished I knew the dangers of antibiotics...

Hello Rachel98 and Welcome to the site

Your case is unusual, it does not sound like CDIFF , did you see a GI while in the hospital that came up with the diagnosis?

We are not able to interpret lab values on the site, your MD's nurse should be happy to talk with you about your lab or refer to the physician. I think an appointment would be good if you are having these concerns.

Take care and I hope you feel better

It was tested positive for C Diff. I was shocked to find out it came back positive. I was diagnosed at a Primary care/urgent care center. They put me on Flaygal, though I have no clue if it will work or not. I certainly hope so. I hope I recover and I hope I won't have to get a new liver.

All that medication your on/were on can effect the liver results.
I dont think you need to worry too much on that.
Concerning though is that you had NO symptoms of c.diff and only got D after taking a strong laxative!
Not exactly an indication that you have the sort of c.diff that needs treating!
Your test has been done with no regards to the guidlines in place to protect you from a positive result that is a result of normal colonization.
You dont need a new liver, you do need a new Dr!
Make sure you inform the Dr that you only had D AFTER taking a laxative!

I tried hard to let them know my meds weren't working but they turned me away. :( My liver feels tender/numb, etc. I hope that some of these are the side effects from Flaygal. I am having signs of liver failure but everyone is telling me I am crazy.

I heard though that liver failure is quite rare with C Diff. I told my mom. If I don't feel better by tomorrow I am going in. To be put on Vancomycin. Or something.

I agree with Roy that those medications could have elevated your liver enzymes. When I had the flu a few years ago, I was put into the hospital with secondary complications and was given IV antibiotics and my liver enzymes were also elevated. A month later they were fine. I would consult with your doctor and explain your worries. Maybe they will run a liver panel on you in a few weeks to see if there is improvement.

Cant diagnose by internet but almost certainly you dont have active c.diff.
if you "go in" and insist on treatment you would probably get the vanco and it might cause more harm than good!
You seem to be self diagnosing and panicking.
At a guess the "treatment" is causing stress to your liver as the poor thing is responsible for removing most meds from your body. It recovers quickly once you stop insulting it with chemicals.
If your not running to the bathroom several times a day and night with what another poster described as "an involuntary waterfall running from my butt" you probably dont have ACTIVE c.diff.
You said your meds are not working.
Your mirilax certainly did work!
What symptoms are you currently suffering?

Yes.
What are your c.diff symptoms.

In addition
Dehydration is caused by the relentless D that c.diff causes.
If you were treated for dehydration but did not have relentless D for many days prior then it would not be caused by c.diff.

My C DIFF symptoms are:

Abdominal cramping and pain
Rapid heart rate
Nausea
Dehydration
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
Swollen Abdomen
(Dirreaha happened during the third week.)

I honestly don't feel this medicine is safe for my liver. I should probably let it heal. Is it safe to get off of it? Maybe I should speak to a doctor about it. Even if it is just at an urgent care.

C.diff is categorized by the presence of persistent watery diarrhea; not the symptoms you listed. While you may be positive for c.diff, it sounds like it is not the cause of your other concerns.

If you haven't already, would make an appointment with a GI specialist to see if they can shed some light on what's happening.

Good point! I guess all of those meds they had me on in the hospital probably raised my liver enzymes and caused some inflammation. I would stop taking the antibiotics but it may make me resistant to future antibiotics and since I tested positive for C DIFF it may be dangerous to leave it unchecked. Going to make an appointment.

How many days should I give Flaygal to work? My stool is soft and has a classic C DIFF Oder.

 "classic C DIFF Odour"
How do you know what that is?

As far as I know your blood tests would be considered within normal range.
