Why STILL see Bloodshot (Colitis from CDiff) after 2 months recovery?Very depressed Please help

Postby Brendap » Thu Jan 17, 2019 7:53 pm

I have been suffered from C.Difficile infection after taking antibiotics for gum infection. My symptoms include bloody mucus and mushy stool.

I took 10 days Vancomycin (250mg) 2 months ago. I got a couple faeces tests done and the results came back with negative.
But, I still can see some blood with mucus on my stool after I finished the Vancomycin.
My GP told me that was totally normal as C.Difficile bacteria has damaged the lining of colon and it takes time to heal.

Now already 2 months since I finished the Vancomycin. I am very careful on my diet and taking probiotic every day.
My symptoms has been improved a lot.
I am able to have semi-form stool every day (before that was just too mushy and unformed), and mucus has been reduced a lot. I did not see any blood on my stool for 4 weeks.
However, I’ve just noticed there are one or two bloodshot with little mucus mixed with my stool this week. It happens 2 days in a raw after my bowel movement.
They are very tiny and unnoticeable unless you really pay attention on it. They are not due to haemorrhoid or fissure and they are not from food residue.
Other than this, my bowel movement still normal as usual.
I am very worried so I went to do the faeces test again. The result came back fine. No C.Difficile.
I also went to see specialist . He suspected the blood could be from Ulcerative colitis (or inflammation) which bought by C.Diffile infection.
He then suggested me to do colonoscopy and biopsy to confirm this.

I am very upset and my tears can’t stop falling. I thought I am on the way of recovery. I did not see the blood for 4 weeks and why it now coming back?

Do I really need to undergo colonoscopy and biopsy? I’m so worried that these procedures will make things worse.
Do I need to worry on this tiny bloodshot?
Is this normal for the colon inflammation to take so long to recover? Almost 2 months since I finished the Vancomycin.
(as what the specialist said the inflammation could be due to the damage of colon lining by C.Diffile)

I am very stressful and depressed at the moment as this journey is very hard to go through. Nobody can I understand my situation, not even my family members.

I need your help to advise this, please. Thanks.

There are other ways to rule out IBD before you do a colonoscopy. There is the option of a simple calprotectin test that will show weather or not you gut is inflamed and also the rectosigmoidoscopy that that doesn't require that awful prep that can flush the good bacteria you build up after you went off your treatment , it only requires a gentle enema and a liquid diet 12 h prior to the procedure.

Thanks Georgina. I am living in Australia. Not sure if calprotectin test available here. Do you think is it too quick to do colonscopy? I am keep thinking why there is tiny little blood on my stool. Even though it is 100% better than it was but it disappeared for a month. Not sure why it is now coming back. How long for colon lining to recover? I am so tired and stressful. I have put a lot of effort to improve the things, I thought I am recovered since no blood for a month but this is not the case. I totally lost... I even thought of giving up...

Brendap, do not give up! If you're feeling so hopeless that you wonder if life is worth living, please ask one of your doctors to refer you to a therapist with whom you can talk in person. This is a good support site, but it has its limitations, chief among them being it's online and not as reassuring as being able to meet with someone in person.

I can't advise medically about whether the colonoscopy is necessary or whether it would be better or worse to delay having it. However, blood should always be investigated. I do not think the colonoscopy or its prep will cause a relapse of C. diff. It may cause worse D for a day or two, but that should stop before long.
If your illness was preceded by use of a medication, e.g., an antibiotic, please fill out an FDA Adverse Event Report at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm
