Children with C.diff

Postby Melba07 » Sun Jul 01, 2018 11:51 am

Hi,

My daughter was diagnosed with C.diff 3 weeks ago. I'm dumbfounded on how this occurred. We are a very gut-healthy family and big proponents of probiotics (gave probiotics to my children as infants and while I nursed....still take them daily). My daughter is 6 years old. She has been on roughly 3 doses of antibiotics since birth. She got her first ear infection in April of 2018. Her pediatrician put her on Suprax. After that was finished, is when she started showing signs of something going on in her gut. I took her to a pedi gastro and he ran a slew of tests. He confirmed the c.diff diagnosis. He immediately put her on Vanco. I upped her probiotic intake and also added S. Boulardii to her daily intake. All seemed well during the time of Vanco. She told me her stomach stopped hurting and her BMs went back to normal....until last night. Once again, she presented with stomach pains and loose BMs. I'm completely dumbfounded.

It should be noted that during this time, I went to an extremely low sugar diet and lactose-free. She has never stayed in a hospital either. We have a follow-up visit with her pedi gastro this Thursday, July 4th. I'm terrified of the possible side-effects and how to move forward. She's 6!!!! She shouldn't be going through this. Does anyone have a child going through this as well?

Thank you in advance.

Hello and Welcome to the site Please read the first thread for all new posters

I am so sorry you had to find us especially because your child has CDIFF. We have had several posters on here whose children have had CDIFF, seeing the PED GI is very helpful and you may also ask to bring in an ID specialist to work with the GI.

The few I can recall also had no "specific reason" for getting CDIFF. It's out there in the environment and why a child who has not been on antibiotics picks it up....I don't think an answer has been found.

I hope with the title to your post a few of the Mom's will see it and jump in here with info and support. I recall "ocmama" having a child that was also positive and you may want to try a private message to her. It will give an email alert. You can also look in the search bar for her name and postings, I don't recall how old her child was.

Hopefully some will see your post, wishing you the best at your Appt with the Pedi Gi

Thank you, NaciT, for your response.

The last 3 weeks have been extremely stressful and absolutely exhausting. She's currently in summer camp and her worries are that she may have an "accident" in front of the other kids. A 6 year old should not have to worry about this.

As an adult, you can understand why there are diet restrictions and the potential ramifications of not following a proper, gut-healthy diet. As a 6 year old, these things are difficult to understand.

I'm truly worried that her pedi gastro will want to try yet another round of Vanco. I don't know what the potential ramifications are of keeping her on such a high and strong dose of an antibiotic are. Along with being dumbfounded on how she acquired this (I need to just get over that and deal with the situation at present), I'm terribly stressed about the possibility of her developing side-effects such as colitis, etc. Another stool sample came back and showed that she is having a malabsorption to sugar. I believe this is due to c.diff. She never once presented or showed any signs of having a sugar malabsorption before. I trust there would have been many signs. Other than c.diff, she was an absolutely healthy child.

I'm already tired and stressed and it's only been 3 weeks. I can't imagine what other parents may feel like if they've been dealing with reoccurrences and that sort of thing for any longer.

Thanks again in advance.

I remember a man who had a 5 year old that relapsed several times and she underwent FMT via colonoscopy and was fine after that. Hopefully, the second round of vancomycin and the probiotics will clear this up for your daughter. Is your doctor planning on tapering this course? That works better sometimes. You might talk to him or her about it. All the children that I remember that had c difficile did eventually get well.

Thank you, everyone.

I'm beyond stressed. My other daughter (5 years old), is now complaining of stomach issues. Now, my stomach hurts and I have noticed changes. I thought I did everything in my power to prevent spreading.....washing sheets, cloroxing, religious hand-washing, etc....everything.

I'm terrified this will have long-term effects on my daughter. She usually has a "robo-cop" immune system. I'm sorry....I'm just venting at this point.

Thank you, everyone, for the support shown.

Thank you so much!

Hopefully your stomachs are just funny dealing with the stress from your older daughter’s CDI. Please let me know how she does, and feel free to message me if you ever have questions or just need someone to talk to who has been there.
