Don’t take probiotics? Confused

I was just given the “all clear” to stop taking Vanco by my G.I. He advised me NOT to take probiotics of any kind or yeasts of any kind (Saccharomyces Boulardii) for up to 3 months. I was told by my GP to take probiotics the whole time (which I did) and today my G.I. said I should have never taken probiotics during antibiotic treatment even if I was spacing it out. He said it could make things worse. Has anyone been told to avoid probiotics for their entire Cdiff adventure including after? I just spent a lot of money on Florastor and he said don’t take anything. Thoughts?

After 10 days of Dificid, on Sept 12, 2017, I continued to take

--- five Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS (5 Billion) AND
--- two of Dr. Tobias Deep Immune AND
--- one of Dr. Tobias (30 Billion) 10 Strains Probiotics for Women and Men AND
--- one of NOW 25 Billion Probiotic-10

I gradually reduced the Saccharomyces Boulardii until I am now taking only one. I am also still taking the other probiotics.

I have no idea if taking these have helped any but they certainly haven't harmed me. My fear of a C-diff relapse keeps me taking these, especially the Saccharomyces Boulardii.

Every GI I have seen has told me to take probiotics. The only one that advises against taking them is the SIBO specialist. If you have SIBO, then it is not a good idea to introduce bacteria, good or bad, into the small intestine. However, since I had c diff, I do continue to take probiotics, even today. I just take a small amount and it does not make the SIBO worse. If you have the Florastor already, you can try a small amount and see how you feel on it. I felt worse on sacc. boulardii, but some people do very well with it. I take VSL#3 every day. Whatever you try, try a small amount to start and see how you react.

I have always been told by all of my doctors to take probiotics, especially in recovery after c-diff. I took 2-VSL3s during the active c-diff infection back in 2014. I continued to take 1-VSL3 and 1-Florastor daily for years after. I still take 1 probiotic daily, alternating between culturelle and Florastor. I feel that probiotics aided in my recovery, among other issues that I used to have. Not everybody can tolerate probiotics though.

I have found that whether or not to take probiotics is really a personal choice. Everyone seems to have different reactions to post C. Diff probiotic intake. I take Floraster whenever I have a medical procedure that requires an antibiotic, but I stay away from them when I'm well. I have IBS daily and for a long time, taking any kind of a probiotic on a daily basis seemed counter intuitive. Now, 5 years after C. Diff, I am able to eat yogurt on a daily basis without increasing the discomfort from IBS. Even though I did not relapse, nor did I have another episode of C. Diff, my colon is still very sensitive to many types of food, especially sweets, salads, and spicy food. After resisting taking any form of a probiotic for a long time, I finally returned to 1/2 a container of yogurt every morning. I also resisted taking medication for the IBS for a long time and just used a heating pad and Tylenol when an episode hit hoping it would eventually stop. I grew very tired of being in pain every day, so I am now taking the Bentyl when necessary. This is my story, but everyone has their own story of their battle with C. Diff and the aftermath. Reactions can vary depending on age, health, lifestyle, etc. Good luck to all of you.
Aloha,
Anne

If there was/is blood in your stool Florestor and possibly other probiotics must not be used.
If florestor has a route into the bloodstream it can cause problems.
