Can people take them both at the same time? I know VSL is some powerful stuff. Don’t know if I’m overdoing it taking them both together twice a day

Many people take both together without problems.
it's a "try it and see" situation.
I don't know if I would call any OTC probiotic powerfull though.
there's around 2kg of bacteria in a normal gut so those little pills (that do not ever multiply) are not a massive addition!

Great. Definitely getting scared. Had watery d twice yesterday. Stool almost smells like what I ate. Last night just had chicken soup with carrots and celery.

Is VSL over the counter? I bought it online and it cost a pretty penny compared to the s boulardii..

When I was first diagnosed with c diff I wasn’t really even having frequent bouts of d. Just localized pain above my navel, on and off fatigue, and on and off nausea (never vomited). I have mild bouts of cramping but that’s about it. Bo localized pain, no nausea.

Really really worried. I know the three day rule. But it’s two days in a row now with d. Monday I also had two bouts of d. Came out of nowhere. Didn’t have to go, then BOOM, needed a toilet! Then Tuesday bounced back with solid. Wednesday was pretty fine, but Thursday all hell broke loose after having dairy the night before, and with major excessive gas to boot. Last night gas was gone had solid little pieces (almost felt constipated) and then had two bouts of d at night. So confused, so worried. Don’t wanna go back on anti biotics. Just wanna move on with my life :-/

I’ve just learned though that chewing a lot of sugar free gum can cause diarrhea.maybe that’s what is causing it? Did not know that. I’ve been chewing a s**t load (no pun intended) to help with anxiety. Like literally 25-30 pieces a day.

Yes, sugar-free-gum ingredients that end with an -itol (e.g., sorbitol, mannitol) suffix are known for having a laxative effect. Which leaves sugared/regular gum; I've found that chewing it is helpful for GERD. I've not had cavities linked to chewing sugared gum, perhaps just due to luck. Regrettably, the "natural" gums that one finds in stores such as Whole Foods tend to become hard after a few minutes of chewing.
If your illness was preceded by use of a medication, e.g., an antibiotic, please fill out an FDA Adverse Event Report at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm

Do you mean your Dr ordered a C.diff test even though you did not have diarrhea and you submitted a formed stool sample for testing?
If that's what happened ALL the c.diff testing guidelines that are there to protect you from wrongly being diagnosed with c.diff ( as a disease )have been ignored.
C.diff (as a disease) is suspected because of diarrhea and is confirmed by testing.
Experts wrote the rules and the experts say no diarrhea means no disease and no treatment needed regardless of test results!
C.diff is a normal gut flora in many people and trying to eliminate it is not recommended, in fact trying to eliminate it damages the gut flora and can make it go full blown!
Overgrowth of c.diff and the hosts response to the overgrowth is the disease, NOT the detection of the bug!
As another example, if your Dr ordered an E.Coli stool test it's almost 100% certain that it would be positive, EVERYONE carries E.Coli and if its not causing a disease it's best to leave it alone!
C.diff is not a disease, the disease is called C.DIFF COLITIS.

And yes, more than a couple of sticks of sugar free gum a day could cause diarrhea.
It has also been implicated in damaging the gut flora and causing dysbiosis!

Well at the time, I had gotten the influenza b and was having d 2-3 times a day, and then immediately had stomach issues. I had loose stools, grainy dark in color, mucus, but then occasionally would have solid stools in between. Was weird. I did submit a solid stool distributed between 4 different viles. The quest people told me usually they use liquid, but c diff could be detected through a solid one as well. The gastro people called me the following Tuesday and told me I had c diff and then put me on a 14 day dose of vanco 4 times a day.

Had no idea what the ground rules were for that. All I did was take them at their word.

So now what? If what you’re saying is true, what can I do? Have there been people in the position that have come out the other side ok? Now I’m REALLY worried I messed things up more with sugarless gum. Oh god :(...

No point in worrying about yesterday, can't change that!
I would stop the gum and see if things improve. (diet soda is another offender)
Also eat bland for a few days.(or weeks) and unless you get obvious c.diff diarrhea don't panic into testing or treating or adding more OTC meds into the mix.
A good rule about what you can eat to give your gut a break is if you would not give it to a 2 year old then don't eat it yourself.

No need to use the quote feature, it makes posts harder to read.

Gotcha. Gums cut out.

So I just went to the bathroom for the first time today. Pretty solidish stools. They were formed. Haven’t really eaten today yet aside from a banana. Was just about to have homemade chicken soup and some saltines.

Woke up this morning feeling a bit nauseas but I hear that’s normal. Also stressed and I think the anxiety’s killing my appetite.

The thing about my stool is that although it was formed, it was only medium sized pieces. I felt like I had to get more out but couldn’t. That scares me a bit. It was normal colored and no blood, but as I was trying to push to get what felt like more out I felt like I was straining my shoulders. Very mild abdominal cramping, but no pain.

The thing is I had that two days ago, no stomach effects, then I had a whole lotta sugar free gum, then BOOM, excessive stomach rumbling, then watery d. Same thing as yesterday. Felt like I was barely having BMs, felt almost backed up, but my stomach and appetite were perfectly fine. Then went overboard with the sugar free gum, and then BOOM, same thing.

Getting nervous. I wonder how bad I screwed myself. Like I said if the sugar free gum gave me dysbiosis is that reversible? Without anti biotics? Do people come out of that ok?

Also worried because although my stools so far today were fine, I’m worried about the smell. I worry a bit because I have those Clorox things in my toilet and can’t really smell them in the bowel, but sometimes I feel like my stool, even when formed smells a little strong, or sometimes even like the things I just ate...

The thing is is that I didn’t go to a general practitioner, I went to a gastro specialist to order this test. The quest diagnosis people told me solid stools were ok to turn in. Wouldn’t they be able to tell if the c diff was an issue rather than just there? Ugh, so much stress right now :(

Anything apart from copious watery diarrhea 3 x a day or more is normal, stop looking in the toilet.

Bobbo112,
Pls read the first forum with the rules of posting, No need to repeat what someone else posted when answering him/her. Just the name is enough and takes less room.

Agree with others - maybe too many supplements. Magnesium, especially, has a laxative effect.

Many (about out of 3 or 4) develop IBS) after c diff. Symptoms are similar to c diff. See CDI. - IBS and CDI - three day rule.

You will eventually get better. Hold on. A late welcome to the site.

Thank you and sorry for any inconveniences and for being repetivie. Working in overdrive just to make my situation clear. Ive just been through the ringer since Christmas time between fluroquinolone toxicity, the flu, c diff, and c diff treatment that I’m starting to lose it. Never been more miserable in my entire 28 years of living. I know Rome wasn’t built in a day, but I feel a lot of doom and gloom between everything that’s happened. I know I’m not the first, but I’m scared, you know, -less :-/

Anyone here get a night of d and then a day of feel like you can’t completely empty your bowels? Small thin pieces of thin stool, but feel like I can’t get it all out. My shoulder actually gets strained trying. Burning from last nights diarrhea show.

Ive been reading through this thread. Call your GI with your concerns and we ask posters not to give daily reports.
We all do understand the anxiety this illness causes for each and everyone of us especially after we complete medication and the fear takes over it will return. Nearly everyone has trouble Post medication and also Post FMT. We call it the "new normal" and things can be all over the place.
Your GI may recommend a medication ( like Levsin) or if the D continues they may want to test, but there should always be a follow up if the patient continues to have symptoms.
We have several posters who are told they have a "mild" case but that is tough to know until you have been though it. I had D 3-4 times in the AM only...and did not have an easy to treat case.
Everyone is different and its a matter of time.
Write down notes and go see the GI, its always best to follow up
Hope you feel better soon!!

Gonna call the gi, but if I could just run this last thing by you guys just to ease a little bit of anxiety?

So I ended up going today twice. Keep in mine I finished 12 days ago for treating c diff. First time was formed but mushy, second time was solid little pieces with a hint of mucus on top. And that was right after I took my daily round of supplements. Not sure how good or bad that is to still had mucus twelve days out (even just a little bit), but no diarrhea.
