When to go back to exercising?

Hello! I had my FMT on January 5th and so far so good. I have been improving little by little each day. The beginning was rough but the last few days, I am seeing glimpses of normalcy coming back. My diet is still pretty bland and I am adding things one at a time and keeping a food journal. Friday will be 3 weeks out from my FMT. I have read a few times that at 4 weeks post treatment, your chances of relapse go down and then at 8 weeks, most doctors consider you to be “cured” if you have not relapsed. I don’t know what the reliability of that is but my question is, I was a gym rat prior to cdiff. I am a 29 year old female and I was going to the gym 3 times a week lifting and cardio until I got sick. I’m hoping to try and ease myself back into my old routine. I know I won’t be able to do what I did before cdiff at first but I need to start sometime. Do you all think that at 4 weeks post FMT (if I have not relapsed, knock on wood) would it be a good time to try to ease into my old routine and return to the gym? Or should I wait until the 8 week post FMT mark? Thanks!

You had c.diff, your not an invalid!
If you feel well then life goes back to normal.

I exercised when I had c diff -

jazzercise (aerobics) and line dancing. Did not "cure" me but made me feel better.

Walking and increasing the distance slowly is great exercise.

Start slow, and work up. Glad u are better.

Thanks Roy and Bobbie! I am feeling very good lately. I guess I’m just scared to let my guard down. Somehow I feel like I’m going to jinx myself if I get too comfortable. So, going back to the gym and back to a completely normal life is like saying, I think I’m cured and I’m scared to admit that! Lol. I know it’s silly. I think I will wait until the 4 week mark. That’s a little less than a week and a half away.

MrsM25: I too was a gym rat for many years. When I quit the gym, I exercised at home - pilates, weights, and cardio. After C. Diff, I was very weak and had lost a lot of weight so I just walked around the neighborhood every day. However, if you are feeling that good, go for it! Just listen to your body and don't push it.
Aloha and good luck!

look after your mind as well, your anxiety is in overdrive.
Your over thinking things and reacting to the "What ifs".
Don't push family away that are concerned about you.

My anxiety is terrible. I go to counseling but it only helps a little. I’ve always suffered from OCD and anxiety and getting cdiff has really sent me into overdrive. The uncertainties of the diesease is distressing to someone with OCD because you want to be in control of everything and this is one thing you cannot be in control of. I pray that as time goes on and I continue to improve, it lessens. Life with OCD is constantly thinking about “what if’s.” Going to the gym was my only release so its been hard not doing that.

And if you knew my mother in law, you’d understand. Believe me, I’m not pushing her away, lol. The people who I’ve told have been very supportive. My husband really has been great through it all. I’ve considered medication for the anxiety/OCD. I just don’t even know where to start with that and medication has always scared me. I have a lot of dependency issues in my family and it freaks me out.

Living with untreated anxiety will affect your gut and healing you gut is very important. Constantly obsessing over Cdiff and relapses will do you more harm. I would suggest that you go see a specialist and do something about that anxiety. And , of course you can go back to the gym if you feel up to it.
