Metronidazole x2

Postby Dawn L » Mon Jan 15, 2018 12:25 pm

I have had 2 consecutive rounds of Metronidazole 10 days each with 4 days in between each with rapid onset immediately after the first round after diagnoses of cliff colitis? Is it normal for stools not to return to normal but be slightly formed? Going crazy with this and being home bound. Seeing Infectious Disease for first time in an hour.

Hi Dawn,

Metronidazole is a bad medicine for c diff - lots of side effects and destroys a lot of your good gut bacteria that you need to fight c diff. It's not even FDA approved for c diff. And it has a higher relapse rate. I hope your ID doc put you on something more effective. Some on this site who have gotten into a relapsing cycle with c diff have found success with a Dificid taper. My daughter was cured by a Dificid taper after 4 relapses - 2 on metronidazole and 2 on Vanco.

Good luck and I hope you let us know how your ID appointment went.

Dawn

My doctor said neuropathy could occur with multiple doses of Metronidazole and that's why doctors typically switch to Vanco after one dose. Neuropathy is also listed in the drug information included with the pharmacy prescription.

As Amg said , Flagyl is not the best option to treat Cdiff , especially not in several courses. Glad you go to see a infectious disease specialist , hopefully he will come up with a good treatment plan for you. The specialists know that Flagyl is not a FDA approved treatment for Cdiff and I'm pretty sure that it will switch the Flagyl to Vanco or Dificid. Good luck!
