Six weeks post 2nd round of Vancomycin

Postby LT428 » Sun Jan 14, 2018 1:47 am

Hello everyone,

I hope all is well. This is my 3rd time posting on this forum. As I’m doing this, I’m lying in bed with so many doubts and fears of this disease. I’m 6 weeks post second round of Vancomycin. Flagyl was the first treatment but tested positive 2 weeks later with no D. Been diagnosed with CDIFF since July 2017. My ‘recovery’ has been extremely rough. Upper stomach pain that doesn’t go away with whatever I eat or drink. Abnormal color and consistency BM everyday. However, I’ve been going 1-2 times a day. I had one D episode in the last 6 weeks but it formed up the next day. Even with my original diagnosis, the max for me was 3x a day with D.

Last night, I went to use the bathroom. As I started to wipe, I noticed M and a small amount of B (sorry, TMI). This is the first time I’ve noticed this in the last 6 months. My question is, should I be concerned that I’m starting a relapse? I did test negative after the last Vanco treatment but I think my GI tested me too early. I’ve been constipated with little pebbles (sorry, TMI). I went 2x this morning and they are pebbles, but no B or M. Besides the fear and depression since the diagnosis, I feel okay. I’m on Florastor and sticking to bland diet. I’m so hungry and oh so want a slice of pizza!

My GI thinks I’m going to be okay. I recently had an ultrasound and blood work done. All was normal. He wanted to do a endoscopy, but I opted out because my stomach pain started to feel better (well, until today). Should I be worried of that one episode of M and B? Also, anyone experience pain under their ribs for a long time?

Thank you for reading! I feel so lost and loosing hope. I recently got engaged and I’m not enjoying this time in my life.

When you have the kind of stools that you describe, that is considered C and those hard "pebbles" can cause bleeding and M. When I get C is when I get M.

Hi LT428,

I am about 10 weeks out from my last vancomycin. I still get random bouts of M and B every once in a while. My doctor told me as long as everything is still formed it shouldn't be too much to worry about. I have an appointment with my GI to ask him about it but the earliest he could see me is in three weeks. I started taking psyllium fiber and that appears to be helping. I also still have tenderness every once in a while in my abdomen and around my belly button. I suffered from gastritis in the past and still get lingering heartburn problems which could be part of the reason for the tenderness in the abdomen.

If you are constipated and the stool is hard then the bowel will create more mucus to help you evacuate your stool. If you tend to be on the C side you can easily develop hemmoroids. Go to a colorectal specialist for a examination.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I wanted to post an update. As of yesterday, I’m 10 weeks post 2nd round of Vancomycin. This morning, I woke up feeling good and went with my normal 1x firmed bowel movement a day. As the day progresses, my symptoms have gotten worst. It’s about 2:30pm where I’m at and I went for the third time already. This time, it’s very loose with the urgency and smell. Pain is towards my ribs area. No fever. I thought I was doing great! Yesterday I had a couple slices of pizza. Could this be the culprit? When I started my second round of Vancomycin, it was 10.5 weeks post treating. I’m beginning to think it’s happening again.

I’m hoping and praying that tomorrow will be better.

It could be the pizza, I would always go back to "Bland" with any upset. As far as the symptoms, if your GI has checked you out and things are good, you may want to discuss IBS with him. There are medications that can help. Often people can go between D and C. As far as the B, review that also and ask for an exam or referral.
This all can take some time. The diet can affect all of this and sometimes you need to go easy.
I recall watching those late night commercials.........very difficult when sticking to a bland diet.
Take Care
