Taking another antibiotic while on vanco

Postby MrsM25 » Thu Dec 21, 2017 10:10 am

Has anyone had to take an antibiotic while on vanco? I was given amoxicillin for what my primary care seems to think is a bacterial infection. He said I’ve been sick too long for it to be viral. I don’t know. Anyway, I haven’t taken the antibiotic yet because I’m scared to. I’m currently on vanco 250mg 4x a day up until a scheduled FMT on 1/5/18. It’s a double edged sword because I don’t want my FMT to get cancelled if I have a chest infection or something but I also don’t want to take amoxicillin unless I need to. What happens when you take an antibiotic while on the vanco? Do your symptoms break through? I’ve been doing so well on the vanco thus far. Thanks!

Did your PCP consult with your GI specialist before prescribing that to you? And what are your symptoms that your doctor defines as characteristic of bacterial infection other than duration? Colds last 2-3 weeks.

There are varied opinions on this. All you can do is if you have a bacterial infection and YOUR physician is convinced you need the medication, take the medication and also let your GI know you are on this. We cannot advise and also interfere with treatment. We can tell you about our own experience.

Some GI's I spoke with while I was on Vanco and kept getting UTI's thought I should treat the UTI's AND stay on the Vanco. They consulted with a group of physicians at a well known large teaching hospital and decided not to keep me on the Vanco. I think the real reason is they thought possibly the Vanco was actually causing the bladder issue in my case.

No one can tell you Vanco is going to cancel out the CDIFF or make it better or worse. The most important thing is for you to get better and communicate with your GI. Better yet, I had my PCP and GI talk and come up with the best treatment plan for me.

Hang in there, we all know the frustration and fear of any antibiotics during or after CDIFF. Hopefully you will start feeling better soon!!

Thank you! It is so distressing! I didn’t think I’d have to worry about it so soon. Feels like I’m living a nightmare everyday! It’s been 8 days and I actually personally feel like I’m getting a little better so I’m not convinced but the other side of me gets scared and thinks, what if I do need an antibiotic to kick it and I just make myself worse by not taking it. It’s a battle. He did not consult with my GI but I called and left a message with my GI’s nurse to talk to him about it and his recommendations. My gut feeling just still says to hold off on it. I don’t want my fmt to get cancelled on 1/5/18 so there’s that part of it too. If I’m not better by then I mean. I feel like I’m in a constant state of anxiety. I just need to catch a break and feel better for awhile so I can feel like a normal human being again. It’s just one thing after another.

You can always request to have a culture done to see if it is bacterial. I've had throat and sputum cultures done. But, if you have to take an antibiotic, best to do it before fmt. If you have an infection or are sick, most likely fmt will be postponed. Talk to your GI as Nancy suggested.
