Daughter has to be put on antibiotic

Postby MrsM25 » Wed Dec 20, 2017 11:50 am

Hello everyone. Well we have just had a string of bad luck lately. I am currently on vanco 250mg 4x a day until my FMT on 1/5/18. I’ve had several relapses which is why I’m having FMT. Anyway, this past week, my 18 month old and I have been very sick. I think I have laryngitis. I took my daughter to the doctor today after being sick for a week and she has an ear infection. They put her on amoxicillin for 10 days. Cue panic mode for me!! During this whole cdiff thing, none of my family members have been on an antibiotic for anything so I haven’t worried too much about them contracting it. I use a separate bathroom. Now though I’m having a panic attack thinking that my daughter has to take this antibiotic! Help!! Can I give her florastor for kids? Any other suggestions to prevent?

Not medical advice (not a doctor), at my ped’s office they no longer treat the majority of ear infections as more often than not they clear up on their own. That being said, her infection may be very severe, and only you and your Ped know the right call to make! (My daughter struggled with a lot of ear infections before C. diff and ended up getting tubes).

For my son who is also 18 months his specialists had him on bio Gaia drops and florastor kids, he has recovered from his C. diff infection and still takes both (and likes taking them).

I am sure that she will be ok! It sounds like you have been super careful!

Only you and your Dr can decide if this needs treating but this link will give you the UK advice on children's ear infections.
US Drs are far more likely to give antibiotics than UK ones.
Very often that's not the correct thing to do.

I also would call your pediatrician and ask what probiotic is best for your child, especially since she's only 18 months old. My daughter who is now 6 struggled with ear issues for most of her childhood. She always had fluid in her ears and bouts of ear infections. She winded up with tubes at 2 or 3 years old and also got her adenoids taken out. She has been much better with her ears as of late. However, I was going through c-diff when she was 3 and she had to be on amoxicillin for an ear infection as well. I believe I gave her Floraboost for kids during and after her antibiotic treatment. As the others said, antibiotics aren't always needed for an ear infection. However, every time my daughter was put on them, they worked to relieve the pain and pressure rather quickly. What I usually do is give ibuprofen to see if it helps to eliminate the pain. If it does, I try to wait it out a little. If the ibuprofen does not work, I then go to the doctor, who usually says it's an ear infection and prescribes amoxicillin. I will then give her the antibiotic. Ear infections are really painful and I won't let my daughter suffer for a long period of time. Two times the ibuprofen worked without antibiotics. This is just what I do with my daughter - not that it's right or wrong. Believe me, I absolutely hate the thought of taking an antibiotic, and I will ask for cultures and really push the envelope before I will treat. I let a sinus infection really get out of control before I finally went to an ENT who said that I had to take an antibiotic after scoping my sinuses. But, as a mother it can really be hard to watch a child suffer in pain for days with an ear infection, while their pediatrician is saying to give them amoxicillin. That's why I take the wait and see approach for a day or two with ibuprofen before treating.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, laryngitis is almost always viral. I've had it several times, and my doctor always told me that.

Hope you both feel better really soon,
Lisa

So, I sent a message the the pediatrician after I left and asked if he would be ok with me holding off on the amoxicillin for a few days and see how she does. She hasn’t really spiked a fever and hasn’t been screaming in pain. She’s still playing and eating and stuff. I’ve been giving her Tylenol which usually takes the edge off for her. My son used to get ear infections a lot when he was her age and would get a high fever. He ended up with tubes. He said he was fine with me waiting and to monitor her condition. I have the amoxicillin in my refrigerator in case I need it. So, for now, that’s where we are with that. She’s napping right now. She seems to sleep fine and everything.

I also went to my primary doc today for myself since I haven’t been getting better with the laryngitis. He actually listened to my lungs and said he thinks I have asthma and that’s why I am having such a hard time. I had this before maybe 2 years ago. He prescribed me a rescue inhaler and nose spray. Of course he wanted to give me amoxicillin but I told him I don’t want to take it yet. I’ll see how I do with just the inhaler and nose spray. I have a family history of asthma but never knew I had any issues. It must be mild and only comes out when my lungs are dealing with something like this. Who knows. Hoping that my daughter and I can kick all of this without antibiotics!!! Praying

I had laryngitis that lasted for several days. Went to urgent care and they did a rapid strep test that was negative. Everything cleared up without antibiotics.

As usual, can’t give medical advice but remember antibiotics are not effective against viral infections.

You have the treatment for asthma which is not an infection.
I would definitely not even consider antibiotics without a throat culture and even then think about it.
So make sure you do your homework before taking any antibiotics that drs sometime prescribe just to make patients feel like they are doing something.
