Duration of antibiotic treatment related to severity of disease?

Postby OCmama » Sat Jul 15, 2017 5:25 pm

Hi All! Has anyone come across any information as to the duration of antibiotic treatment being related to the severity of a C. Diff infection? Or are you just as likely to get full blown C. Diff colitis from one dose of offending antibiotics as you are from taking a ten day course?

Thanks!

Hi. Unfortunately in my case, i got cdiff from one dose of clindaymacin and it took me a little while to be rid of it. I don't think the quantity matters (but that's my opinion).

I got cdiff after taking one Cipro pill and 4 days of levaquin (4 pills). I then had cdiff for 8 months.

I think it all depends on how good your gut flora is to begin with. If you don't have a lot of good bacteria, even one pill can do damage. Everyone is different and the type of antibiotic also makes a difference. Clindamycin and Cipro/levaquin are among the worst offenders.

My life with c diff began in 1993 with four days of Vantin for a sinus infection and bronchitis. It is rarely used now because of all the c diff associated with it,

I do not know how a doc decides in the length of treatment. Sometimes I think they "guess."

I took 10 days of high dose Clindamicin and prednisone the third week April 2016 and didn't have symptoms until 3rd week of May 2016.

Mine was 5 days of Cipro for a UTI in November 2015. Had issues with recurrent c diff for 18 months until my 2nd FMT.
