Alternative Medicine

Postby Bobbie » Sun Aug 07, 2005 8:20 pm

Jenny S. brought up a good point in a recent post. Some people have luck with alternative medicine in treating C. diff.

Here are some websites that I found under keyword "Dr. Andrew Weil." (Dr. Weil graduated from Harvard Medical School, is an accredited expert in the medicinal properties of plants, and Assoc. Director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the U. of Arizona in Tucson.)

www.drweil.com The award-winning “Ask Dr. Weil” website includes a daily Q & A, a searchable database of health information, and community discussion boards.

www.integrativemedicine.arizona.edu The website for Dr. Weil’s Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona includes information regarding his patient clinic and fellowship program for physicians.

www.newage.com Our sister publication, New Age, has been the leading holistic lifestyle magazine since 1974. In its pages you’ll find resources, information, and inspiration to help you stay healthy in mind, body, and spirit.

www.holisticmedicine.org If you’re looking for a holistic-minded practitioner, you can request a directory listing of professionals from the American Holistic Medical Association for $10.

http://nccam.nih.gov The website for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) includes information on alternative and complementary therapies for both the public and practitioners.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed Search for medical research studies with this free service from the National Library of Medicine.

www.oncolink.org Sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, this website has information on specific cancers, psychosocial support, and clinical trials.

www.commonweal.org The Commonweal Cancer Help Program offers healing retreats for cancer patients and caregivers. You can also read excerpts from Choices in Healing: Integrating the Best of Conventional and Complementary Approaches to Cancer by Michael Lerner, who founded the Program.

www.rarediseases.org You don’t have to have a rare disease to find useful information on over 1,000 conditions at the site for the National Organization for Rare Disorders, which also includes a searchable database of support groups and other helpful organizations.

www.consumerlab.com ConsumerLab.com performs independent tests of dietary supplements, including vitamin C, ginkgo, and SAM-e. Complete test results are available with a paid ConsumerLab.com subscription.

www.herbs.org Get information on a variety of herb-related topics, as well as the latest herb research news from the nonprofit Herb Research Foundation.

To learn more about these healing techniques and find a qualified practitioner:

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
www.nccaom.org The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
www.acuall.org The Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Alliance

Guided Imagery
www.interactiveimagery.com The Academy of Guided Imagery

Massage
www.amtamassage.org The American Massage Therapy Association

Remember, this website doesn't endorse any particular doctor or alternative medicine practitioner. It is a support site -- not a medical site, and we only mention and don't promote what has worked for some of us.

As with any disease, proceed with caution with any product or drug and do your own research. Many companies are only interested in selling you their product. It's up to you to determine whether it is right for you or not. And do check with your regular medical doctor and/or pharmacist about any new treatment.

The field of alternative medicine has many charlatans (as well as qualified people) so be sure you check out the qualifications and credentials of anyone you consult in the field. In most states, I don't believe you have to be certified or even take a required number of courses, but each state differs. Also, the FDA does not yet regulate herbal products and supplements although there are plans to do so in the future.

"Be aware" is the wisest course of action.

To check out info. on supplements (remember, FDA doesn't regulate them), see www.consumerlab.com. There is a fee to join but you can do some research free. Several pharmacists recommended this site to me. There is also some info. on probiotics.

Remember this site doesn't endose any products.

Bottom line: Always check out his/her credentials if you decide to see an alternative medicine doctor. Many hospitals now have a holistic or alternative medicine doc. on staff. They are supposed to be interested in the "whole person." Most insurance policies, however do not cover an alternative medicine practitioner.
