PI-IBS & Probiotics

Postby Rosie93 » Wed Feb 01, 2017 11:35 pm

I am 6 months post FMT and am still no where near normal. I have what I assume to be PI-IBS. I have been on Bentyl, an antispasmodic for over a month as well as a low fodmap diet. Unfortunately, I am still experiencing so much gas, bloating, and acid reflux. I have 3-4 BMS each morning and feel like I have to "go" for several hours after. Currently I take align and a bifido only bacteria probiotic. Has anyone else had success tampering PI-IBS down? I am becoming discouraged at this point...

For some people, like me, probiotics can actually cause worse GI symptoms, especially the bloating and gas. I had to try several different probiotics before I found one that I tolerate well and even then, I only take part of the capsule. Maybe you should try a different one. Align and Culturelle never agreed with me. I use VSL#3, but there are others. Some people do well with Florastor, which is a yeast. It gave me terrible gas and a rash, but others have had good experiences.

There are several treatment for IBS these days that you can discuss with your doctor about : antispasmodics like Bentyl or Levsin , Viberzi ,antidepressants like Amitryptiline , binding agents like Questran or Enteragam , Rifaximine that can help with SIBO as well. You should go to your GI doctor and see what he recommends.

VSL#3 and Florastor have likewise been helpful for me. I also take IBGuard, and several new supplements recommended by a nutritionist--Zinc-Carnosine, Similase digestive enzyme, and an intestinal support supplement. I have seen a lot of improvement, especially with the latter 3 supplements. Not totally gone--I, too, feel like I have to "go" almost all day--but a lot better.

The reflux symptoms I *have* totally eliminated through a few dietary additions. Kefir works like Maalox for me, but stronger and faster. It also prevents reflux if I drink a cup every day at breakfast. Ginger tea I drink 2-3 times daily, as well as half a bottle of kombucha every afternoon. When a GERD attack is bad, I'll swallow a tablespoon of coarse ground mustard--it isn't tasty, but it stops the symptoms in about 15 minutes. The yoga poses downward-facing dog, cat and cow, and child's pose all provide significant reflux relief too.

Definitely talk to your doctor, as well, and maybe a nutritionist. That was by far the most valuable consultation I've had. I hope some of this may prove helpful--take what you like and leave the rest! Wishing continued healing your way. Take gentle care.

Zinc is supposed to support the mucosal lining of the intestines and helps to build back what was lost. I can't tell you if that's what it is doing or not, but I do know I feel better on it!

I agree with Georgina, follow up with your GI. I did at the 6month point, there are other medications as she mentioned.

Hope you feel better soon

I personally think I have SIBO but so far I've had two doctors tell me they would not put me back on antibiotics because of the risk of getting cdiff back. Are any of the long time contributors aware of anyone who has been treated in the San Diego area?

Beth is an administrator on the site and lives in SoCal, and was treated for SIBO after C diff, so try sending her a pm :)

Not in San Diego though. One of the leading specialist world wide for SIBO is my doctor here, but unfortunately he is not taking new patients and only sees the established ones once a week as he is doing extensive research to find a cure for IBS. Hopefully, he will be successful. However, there are other doctors at the Cedars Sinai Motility Dept. that are also good. It is in Los Angeles. One of them saw a young woman post c diff and post FMT who wound up with SIBO and she is doing much better. If you want information, send me a pm.
