Potato starch after FMT?

Postby okaylo » Sun Oct 23, 2016 12:41 pm

I recently had a consult with a holistic nutritionist who told me that I should drink potato starch in water twice a day to crowd out the bad bugs and encourage the good ones to take over. I made her aware that I have had 2 FMT's and that I also have SIBO/IBS. My doctor's advice after my FMTs was to let nature take its' course and to allow my body time to heal. I have an extremely hard time with my diet and fiber rips me up inside. Anyways, has anyone heard or tried potato starch for stimulating good bacteria in your large intestine/colon? I was also advised that initially it will cause gas and bloating as die off occurs... I don't want to throw another wrench into the equation as my FMT was a little over 2 weeks ago but I'm also worried like I'm not doing anything to help the FMT along. I also worry about the SIBO that I have treated multiple times with no success. Both my gastroenterologist, 2 other gastros and my infectious disease doctor told me that I cannot treat the SIBO anymore as it increases the chances of cdiff and it's just something I will have to deal with as it's the lesser of two evils. Also that SIBO is very difficult to get rid of permanently and has a very high recurrence rate even after antibiotics.Any advice on any of this is greatly appreciated including what you eat post FMT, how you've soothed SIBO etc. Note: I've tried many natural supplements for digestion, low fodmap diet, gluten free diet in the past.

I have SIBO. I don't know anything about potato starch, but I can digest baked or boiled potatoes very well. With SIBO, my biggest problems were fiber as well - vegetables and fruit and they still are. Too many sweets don't sit well either. I can only have a small amount. Probiotics are not recommended for SIBO, but with the SIBO and c diff history, I take part of a capsule of VSL#3 twice a day and it is fine. I have a diet of things to eat and not eat that the SIBO specialist gave me. If you want a copy, send me a pm and I will get it to you.

Can you eat potatoes? I think drinking potato water sounds like silly alt med stuff, sorry to say. I found potatoes very easy to digest after C diff, like Beth said. Potatoes have lots of other nutrients too.

Beth: Thank you for your insight. I have books on SIBO and have researched several diet lists as well. Back when IBS/SIBO were my main issues, I was following Dr. Mark Pimentel's SIBO diet (eating easily digestible foods that are easily absorbed higher up in the small intestine). I am glad I am not the only one who has issues with fiber - fruits and veggies etc. I ate some brown rice cereal for 3 days with a small splash of rice milk and my gut has been even more upside down and I have felt more pain and a more overall ill feeling. Maybe it was not being used to even the small amount of fiber in the cereal (as everything I eat is low fiber). I have stopped eating it to see if my gut calms back down. One wrong food choice and the gut irritation can last for days... My stools have been formed and I am remaining patient but fiber is just not tolerable. I have tried the VSL#3 in the past mixed with water and it sent my gut into a tailspin. I don't tolerate probiotics well but then again I never have. I would love if you could send me your diet list. I will PM you!

Amy: I was thinking the same thing. It seems as if every dietician/nutritionist has an alternate approach and I don't want to start doing something too quickly, I know I need to give it time. I am able to eat potatoes as long as they're peeled so I am going to try eating those this week. Thank you for the reminder.

Dr. Pimentel is the one who gave me the list. He is my doctor for SIBO. That cereal would have sent my GI system into a tailspin as well. I eat Rice Krispies with no issues. Before c diff, I ate raisin bran. Those days are long gone.

I sent you a summary of the list, as I can't seem to attach anything here. I can't tolerate most probiotics. Culturelle and Align give me bloating, gas, cramps and D. The only one that I seem to do ok with is the VSL, but only a part of a capsule in applesauce. If I take a whole capsule, I get GI problems too.

Wow! I tried to get in to see Dr. Pimentel last year but he was booked for months out. I am so glad that you were able to see him and that we had the same information even though I had to get mine from the book... I hear you on the probiotics. I have tried Align, TruLife, VSL#3, Jarrow - various ones, Culturelle, and some generic store bought brands -- everything caused gas, cramping, bloating, and D. I sent you a list of what the nutritionist I went to gave me. Most of the information overlaps with what you had originally sent. Thank you!

Dr. P doesn't take new patients anymore now. He is working on finding a cure for IBS - got a huge grant to do so. Hopefully, he and his team will be successful. He still sees his old patients - I started seeing him in 2009, but even still, I can only get an appointment every 4 - 6 months. He only works one half day a week now. The rest is research and teaching.

Beth, would you send Roy the list of food? I bet he could attach it under CDI. I don't know how to either.

Thanks for the info Beth! Good to know. He is a true asset to the medical field and all of us suffering with GI issues.
